Bogus quarter eagles

A fellow forum member contact me regarding my opinion on this coin. I had stated on a previous thread that I believed it was counterfeit. He disagreed.

Here's an example of a bogus quarter eagle that I picked up (this is the ebay pic) on ebay a while back (I had not known it was fake at the time of purchase). Besides showing it to another forum member, who felt it was fake, I took it to a knowledgable dealer in my area, who, in person, told me they felt it was fake. He pointed out the reasons why (luster is wrong, strike is off), and since then I've been studying up on them. I'm not saying that just because the coins look similar means the 1851 is fake, but there are also a lot of aspects of the 1851 makes is look fake: the denitcles on the reverse seem abnormal, and the reverse lettering seems too small.

So what is your opinion?

It seems fake; the luster is a bit off. Look closer in the denticles with a loupe and you might even find tooling marks.

Lets see some better pictures of it- both sides. Where did you get it? If you got it from Asia or Europe I think your odds are better of it being fake.

The numbers in the date do no appear to line up well. I'd be highly suspicious of this coin and avoid it.

  • When I first looked at it I knoticed the 1 in the date looked too close to the edge....

  • Are there any characterstics to look for in the new crop of fake quarter eagles?

The coin illustrated is a 1905. Are many of the counterfeits dated 1905 or are they using a variety of dates?

I just received a raw 1905 quarter eagle today off ebay with raised lines coming off the right wing, reverse lettering and in the area of the denticles. I would post the photos from ebay but they are not very clear.

As a newbie any help would be appreciated. Fortunately this ebayer has a return policy.

    Right
  • It's difficult with those photos as you can't really examine the denticles, see tool marks, etc. I did a quick comparison with a real one & quickly found a question mark on each side:

Big difference in numerals in the date

Check out the comparative alignment of the arrow head points.

Already it's got me thinking fake & I'm sure if there were better photos more would be apparent!
