Received 10-5-2007. These were the eight freebies from re-joining.

Line # Item # Cert # PCGS No. CoinDate Denomination Variety Country Grade
1 1 12038305 7082 1878-S $1 US VF25 (VAM-57 - expected VF25)
2 1 12038306 7172 1887 $1 US XF45 (Donkey Tail, I expected it would bag - old NGC XF45 and very white)
3 1 12038307 7082 1878-S $1 US Cleaned (Ouch, AU Long Nock. I thought it might go AU55, but am not entirely surprised here)
4 1 12038308 7080 1878-CC $1 US Cleaned (VAM-24, and I was expecting AU58. Major shock on the bag.)
5 1 12038309 7298 1921-D $1 US MS62 (TRUT coin. I was expecting a bodybag. Old SGS MS65!)
6 1 12038310 7082 1878-S $1 US MS60 (VAM-18, Spaghetti Wings, expected MS61)
7 1 12038311 7192 1889-O $1 US MS63 (VAM-6, expected MS62!)
8 1 12038312 7182 1888 $1 US MS63 (VAM-18, expected MS63)

  • Some good and some not so good results. I feel your disappointment with the 78-cc vam 24. I also have an AU58 (ANACS) that PCGS says "cleaned", but I see nothing wrong with it. My recollection is that there are no mintstate examples yet certified by PCGS, so an AU58 would be a homerun. Someday I will try mine again, probably as a crack-out.

You cracked out that donkey tail from NGC; takes guts. Some very cool ones in that bunch. Spaghetti Wings is one I have yet to find and you got MS....very cool. Too bad on that long nock. As an AU, you just have to try again unless it is an obvious bagger. Which VAM is it? A more common one like 56?

I just rejoined and will need to line up some high $ crossovers or something before the certificate gets misplaced. If I could get 75%, like you did, it would be a good day.

  • Jack,
Awesome group. Love the spaghetti wing coins. The MS-60 is a monster for that VAM. image

The Long Nock is a VAM-26. I'll admit the Donkey was a risk, I think both PCGS and NGC net graded it from AU50 to XF45.
