My first Morgan 1902 O MS62

I'm new to this, and have only bought coins for bullion value. It is not much, but my first real old silver piece. Most of my silver collection is in bars, rounds, or ASE. I'm sure in a couple years I will laugh at this purchase but here she is..

And now for the coin: NICE pick up! Go for an 1800's coin next!
Maybe you have a start of a compete New Orleans set? Not a hard
    one to do for sure.

What is weight ? What does the second set of number represent? How hard would it be? How expensive? Sorry, I'm all Q and no A.

I just copied that for you to see the dates of all the O morgans. The weight, the second number, is how much that coin is weighed when calculating the grade average of your set when registered on the PCGS set registry website. For example, the 1886-o is weighted 6, the 1904-o 1, so the 1886-o grade would be counted 6 times and the 1904-o once to get the grade average of your set if you registered those 2 coins. Right now, if you're just starting, don't worry about that. Higher weight is just an indicator of overall scarcity and scarcity in gem grade.

An O mint Morgan set is certainly an obtainable goal, just go slow at first, don't spend too much too fast before learning about each date. The keys run from 1892-o thru 1897-o, those will be the most expensive. You can spend as much or little as you want to get a complete set, anywhere from about $1000 for all the keys in low grade, up to six or seven figures if you have more money than you know what to do with.

A coin with a weight of one is pretty easy to find and usually very inexpensive. The larger the weight the more
the money. However, not all the coins you collect have to be uncirculated. The more expensive ones might be
a lot more affordable in F or EF grade. Up to you and your budget. Start by looking in the red book and if you
don't have one get your butt to the bookstore. A world of information and prices too!
    good luck,
    bob

  • Did I buy a "common" with a poor grade? I see it listed as a 1?
  • sweetwillietsweetwilliet Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭
You did buy a more common date, which is exactly what you should do when just starting out. You have to start somewhere, and you'll limit the size of your mistakes by starting out small. Nice Morgan, enjoy it!!
