1962 Mexico Gold 50 Peso on eBay

Can't find it in Krause & have never heard of "Grove numbers"..

    Wouldn't they be analogous to our Silver Eagle Proofs or Gold and Platinum bullion coins?

    The NGC label says 'Medal' so I assume it is a medal and not official coinage.

    Grove is for Frank W. Grove who authored the Medals of Mexico books which is comprised of 3 or 4 volumes (I don't recall exactly.)
    This one is from volume 2 which covers 1821-1971. Made by the Mexico City mint commemorating the battle of May the 5th, 1862. That's General Ignacio Zaragoza astride the horse.
    The book doesn't have any specifics on the gold version, but does say that 66,275 were struck of the silver version (800a).


    Collector of Fractional Gold; gold tokens from Canada, California, Alaska & other states; gold so-called dollars, and other oddball stuff.

    My old krause Standard Cat. of Mexican Coins lists it as M161a(38mm), there is also a 28mm issue. Combined mintage for the two is 22,614. Purity and weight not listed.

    I think it's a bullion piece since I do not see a denomination struck into the coin. Just looks to be a nice gold round commemorating the
    100th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla 5 May 1862. Cross posted was beaten to the punch please disregard the flapping of my gums.
