Should Joe Torre be fired?

"The boss" is expected to lower the boom on Torre pretty soon. Does he deserve to go? How much blame should he get for the Yankees
losing in the post season?

Unless Torre is responsible for assembling that broken-down, geriatric pitching staff, no.

Blame, maybe some as he pulled the strings on all the changes in the lineup etc. but small amount. I think it is the whole need a fresh start syndrome that the Yankees want. After alot of success with Torre now would be as easy a time to get rid of him and get new blood into your organization. I did find it funny to hear McCarver I think say if Torre leaves so will alot of Yankees. Hmmm if they offer more to play for them than other teams I don't think too many will leave just because of Torre.

no, but he probably will be. the last i looked his team had no timely hitting the tribe did, you can't coach that or their lack of a true number pitcher.
i hope they hire mattingly, because i don't think he's anywhere near the coach joe girardi is.

    good luck with that yanks

No. Besides, his contract runs out this season. So he can't be "fired" anyway.
  • I almost half expected him to tell George to kiss his arse last night after the game,

He can be fired his contract does not expire until Thursday. George is the type person who would fire him because he can.

If I was Joe Torre, I would have quit right there live on ESPN last nite and told Steinbrenner to shove it up his arse.

He's a great manager and someone will be glad to have him.

I think Torre should quit and go to a small market team for a few million a year (like my Pirates) and get back to coaching players instead of managing personalities. It'll never happen, but it would be refreshing to see. Hey, I can dream can't I?image

Would I be selfish if I wanted Torre out so Mattingly (my boyhood idol) is in? Hopefully Torre will be given the chance to retire and leave gracefully.

No, Joe Torre should not be let go. The last three games with Cleveland were really close. The Wang incident was a gamble, but knowing he was the ace of the staff, its hard not to give the benefit of the doubt. However, I think people might have gone on his case about putting in Mussina even more. The Wang decision was not all that bad, but perhaps he should have taken him out sooner. Even then, he did not take him out too late as the Yankee hitting failed to drive in runs when they had runners on base practically every inning. Mussina ended up doing a great job and perhaps the dynamics of the game might have been slightly different if he was given the ball in the beginning. I know Mussina had problems during the season, but he had solid outings towards the end.

    Estil,

I like Mattingly as much as the most passionate of fans, but I still want Torre to be at the helm for a little while longer. Mattingly is a LOCK to get the manager job anyway as much as certaintly can be measured in baseball. It will not hurt Mattingly to stay "in training" for a little longer. He was essentially Co-Manager this year anyway. You think Torre and Mattingly did not discuss decisions on line up and pitching? Mattingly was definately in on the team.

True. I'd like to think that a class act like Torre would be allowed to ride off as if the parting was on his terms rather than some unceremonious firing. I think he's earned that much.

There's no way Torre returns to the Yankeees - just isn't going to happen.

If it were my team, I'd be more likely to fire Cashman than Torre. Whad has Torre done wrong this season? He's not the one that signed a bunch of old dudes to pitch.

But then, I probably wouldn't fire Cashman either because the Yankees should have a very good and very competitive starting rotation next year.

Would be kinda interesting if St. Louis and the Yankees ended up trading managers.

Goose, that might have turned out to be premature is George was just messing with him with his comments image.

Torre's body language and demeanor in the post game press conference seems to suggest that he knows he is on
the way out. The Boss might be waiting until he has a new manager already signed before he makes the announcement.

No. But as a Yankee hater, that would be the best thing that they could do, so go for it, Boss. Can him!

He really needs to leave the Yankee organization. He obviously will never be appreciated until he is gone... which is quite unfortunate.
