The Phrygian, or Liberty Cap, was a popular hat back in the revolutionary days, in the US as well as France.

Me too! For the longest time I never saw anything but AG coins, always thought it was a bow. I was quite shocked the first time I saw an example that had enough detail for me to see what it was.
