So Called Dollar, Brian Boru, HK-390

I aquired a Brian Boru HK-390 in the past and was curious what I could learn about its past and value. I dont have any real expierience in the so called dollar field. It is certified by NGC MS-64. thanks

I know that HK-390 is a rare so-called dollar and fairly expensive, especially in high grade. Regarding current value, I must defer to the resident experts on this subject (tmott99, jonathanb and others).

It's really hard to say what kind of value it may have. Depends where you sell it and how urgent a need is to sell it. Price ranges are huge right now as the market is fairly strong. But sell at the wrong time or venue and you might not get what you expect.

Smallforest has a new price guide out available on ebay. On that, he lists a circulated one at $343. I'd guess that yours might get $750-$1000 but that's only a guess. It's tied with one othat at a top pop with a total of 3 medals certified in all grades. Those numbers will generally excite buyers.

Do you have any pictures of it that you can share?

i have an Aluminum example in my collection, HK-392 to your Silver example. pictures below. this is yet another tough SC$ to assign an availability to, and so also a price, but the price is the easier of the two-----it's worth whatever a collector who's been paying attention lately is willing to pay. since Tom made reference to the "Smallforest" price-guide, it's worthy of note that the 2006 version prices the Aluminum higher than the Silver, even though the Silver is perceived to be rarer. most of the SC$ rarity estimates are at best extrapolated numbers of known medals, guesses if you will. Hibler-Kappen have been proven right on many but wrong on perhaps more and i accept that the new estimates will walk lockstep with those.

in the end, the best a collector can do is to pay attention and note what's happening, both in numbers of medals and pricing/venue where sold, then buy the best quality at the most reasonable price. that plan will almost always produce a nice collection.

God, why would anyone want to collect a medal such as that??? I'd MUCH rather have coins with dead Presidents on them. image
  • Thanks for the info guys. My main areas of my collection are German Talers and Marks, British coins and US early commeratives. This one just caught my at a show and being Irish I had to have it. Probably in my top 10 coins with the Gothic crown , 1915 Prussia-Mansfeld 3 mark, and Oregon comm half (a common coin but what a great design.
