CEO for the Day! What would you do?

Suppose Joe one day woke up and decided that, in the interest of customer satisfaction, and to possibly get better in touch with his customers, that he would, for the next 30 days, choose one customer per day to be CEO FOR THE DAY.

And suppose he chose YOU for one of the days. What would you do?

I would institute an online order tracking system that would tell customers the EXACT step in the grading process that their order was in, and the estimated ship-out time for their completed order. There would be seven possible steps for the order...

STEP 1: Order Received, Not Logged In (but with estimate of when it would be)
STEP 2: Order Received, Logged in (but not yet in the queue for the grading room. This might be nicknamed "Purgatory" since no estimates can be given as to when it will enter the queue to enter the grading room)
STEP 3: Pending Grading Room (Not yet in the "Grading Room", but is imminent--within days)
STEP 4: In Grading Room (this means that the order is receiving attention and is in the process of being graded - a first pass "ship-out" date can be given here)
STEP 5: Post-Processing (grades are complete, cards are being slabbed and prepped for shipping)
STEP 6: Shipping and Final Processing (with an estimate of ship date)
STEP 7: Order Complete and Shipped (with estimate of arrival date)

So what about you? What would YOU do as CEO for the Day?

  • Not have 16 week waits for player additions to the registry. I mean, seriously, how long could that possible take ? 2 minutes after the email is received ? Sheesh

    1) Specials get FASTER turn around time.

    2) Everything guaranteed in at least 30 days or its free.

    3) No premium charges for older cards.

Oops, forgot to say I would stop over at BBC Exchange, and buy all his Vintage wax, then go to the island and spend my days busting it.

First In, First Out. I'd qualify that by saying that there's modern, pre-war, oddballs, etc. where subs of one type might bust sooner than others, but there's no reason other than they don't want to make the effort to not offer such an arrangement.

make em wear gloves so there wont be a giant thumb print on a foil card you could send to feds for a id would be nice, and dont touch the ink on baseballs is pretty well a no brainer, guess they cant resist
  • Make a deal with vintagecardprices to make the SMR in tune with the current market.

I would ban the aliases that only complain, whine, and add zero value to the forum.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

There are a couple of great ideas. I agree that an online tracking system would be good, but it would have to be automated so that someone 'scans' the card in each stage & the information would populate by itself on the site.

I would have an interactive SMR website version where it had the technology (or partnership with VCD) to update the 'real' prices of the cards out there on eBay, Naxcom & major auction houses.

I would then hire myself about double the staff, keep specials priced at $7 (gotta pay for the add'l staff, you know), but have turnaround times of about a month (calendar days) at the longest. Bulk subs would get special pricing (but not "special" grading), especially if all of the cards are of a certain set/year. This way, I could have two or three specialized graders see the cards and place the grades on there a little quicker.

The way to continue to generate interest in having oddball/regional/minor star or common player cards is to update the set registry. I mean, have someone take a week and just fix all of the current issues (incorrect cards in basic vs master sets, etc) and then get ALL of the requests in within 2 business days of the request. The registry is one of the main reasons why folks continue to pay big prices for certain cards that normally nobody would want. And, by paying big prices, it gives the large sub dealers add'l motivation to continue to send in all sorts of cards to get graded.

I'd also give the go ahead to start the construction of PSA-EAST with the headquarters being somewhere like Tennessee or in the middle of the Eastern side of things. This way we'd have quicker shipping turn around times and more representation at East Coast events/shows.

There are a few other things that I would do, but those are the first few things that I would tackle.

OH! And I would give Cosetta a raise! image

    1) Create an $8-$9 service level for 50's and 60's cards. Right now, there's nothing between the $6/$7 bulk rates and the $13 special rate. I'd make the turnaround time around twenty days. I think it would be a good fit for a lot of star cards and premium commons (ie. low pops)that aren't economical to grade for $13.

    2) Change the modern charge back to $8. Not sure why they changed it to $10, but I think that's an excessive charge considering the declining premiums realized by modern graded cards. I think they'd get more business with an $8 fee, and they'd be more competitive with BGS in the bowman chrome market.

    3) Hire someone p/t who can develop quality counterfeits to continuously test the graders to keep them on top of their game. To me counterfeiting has always been the biggest threat to the graded card industry.

I would charge even more money to grade your cards. I would only give you a cell number to call with a cheezy voice mail of "you know what to do". And i'd **POOF** every one of ya!! image

Seven figures. She's worth every penny.

Psssssssssst, TB and I want to run PSA East.
  • If anyone who regularly posts on these boards was in charge of the company, I would short sell as many shares as possible as the stock would tumble to an all time low.

all these require a lot more manpower.

1). get rid of the membership requirement for submissions
2). sack the entire customer service dept, including the people that produce the labels for the flips (NO MORE "MECHANICAL ERRORS")
3). hire a CS staff that has a background in the hobby as well as in customer service
4). get rid of authorized dealers that have key staff members / owners with criminal histories

Hmm....TB and Meathook....I'd have to think about that one! image

But, I would do as schr1st suggested and hire a staff that is not only familiar with the hobby, but has a background (non-criminal, of course image ) with working/involved in the hobby for a minimum of 10 years. Preferably, folks that lived through the '80s boom and '90s swoon and knows the difference between a black chrome printing plate refractor numbered card and a reverse negative Littlefield card as well.

  • I'd improve the website, make it easier to track submissions, and make it possible to add submissions to a registry by simply clicking your order status. Everyone should be able to sign in once and see their orders, their registries, the SMR -- EVERYTHING -- without having to sign in multiple times or enter in silly order numbers.

I'd stop doing monthly specials and simply stick to the stated fees / turnarounds. Then manpower would be less of an issue. And I'd back up the guaranteed turnaround with an "or your whole order is free" promise. At most, I'd do 2 specials a year, one in the winter when submissions slack.

I'd also drop the yearly fee. People should be able to spend that $100 on grading, not start out $100 in the hole.
