Not rare, but not everywhere either.

For a number of dates and denominations they are quite elusive, esp going back prior to 1879. But it's also a shame that nearly all the DCAM's come from dipping out nicely toned cameo coins. To me, the orig CAM's are far more desireable....and ironically cost less.

  • I am in total agreement with RR on this one!

Before they gave out Cam designations you could buy cameo proofs for little to no premium. Many dealers thought cameos were pretty common. Really frosty coins with deep mirrors are not the norm. However many people found that if they dipped a toned coin it would "upgrade" to cameo. DCAM coins were still elusive. (I haven't checked the pop reports lately...)

Here is one of my favorite coins. To me it is cameo all day long. It has very frosty surfaces. Fortunately I was able to place it with a collector who has put it in his box of 20. I hope he offers me a shot at it if he ever sells so I can be sure it doesn't get dipped...

This is a double dime graded PR 64 by PCGS. After they started giving out cam designations it was sent in for review but didn't get the designation. This photo shows off the frost. The coin has a rich red and champagne tone that I love to see on seated proofs.

I have several cameo coins in older holders (not noted) but none this deep:

RR is having a good weekend, lots of good posts. Following his thought I looked up the info on this PR63 PCGS later date seated half.

Anybody want to dip it? In all grades there are 197 plain PR graded coins, 26 CA designated coins and 5 DCAM designated coins. But the good news is price guide only shows a $150 increase for CA and $200 for DCAM. Perhaps it takes into account the desirability of the original surfaces--not that an undesignated coin is guaranteed to be original.

I'd say that about 90% of the DCAM Seated coins look like they have been dipped. Either way they are fairly rare, but I wouldn't want to be holding onto the dipped out looking ones over the long run.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
