1971 Topps Football Set Break Lots of Photos

I purchased a NM 1971 Topps Football set at the national that was 25% graded with the average grade PSA 7. I already had the Bradshaw and Greene in 8's so I figured I was well on my way. I am starting to go through the rest of the raw cards too see if there are any NM cards left to grade. The scans below are what I think have a chance of NM or maybe beter. All the star cards are either OC or damaged in some other way. The set as a whole has screaming color and gloss with mint corners but there are centering issues. There was a number of PSA 8 cards from this set graded already.

Do you guys think I would average a PSA 7 grade on these? This is the highlights after sorting through the first 120 cards. My Sonny Jurgensen is Mint OC and my Bradshaw is EX. The rest of the stars I have looked at are EXMT or OC.

Just be sure and look for the little surface wrinkles, those look nice. Good luck!

I have over half this set in psa 7/8 condition and these cards look like they will grade in the psa 7/8 range from what I can see!! Most will be 7's due to centering issues.. Make sure to specify "no qualifiers" with your sub if you don't want any qualifiers attached to some of your cards... I have about 50 cards that look like yours that I should be sending off to psa using the current special but haven't gotten around to it yet!!! Best of luck.. I love this set and its VIBRANT colors!

Thanks for the advice on the NQ designation as I was worried that some might get the 8OC designation rather than a straight 7 which I know sometimes you can get instead of a 6. I wouldn't mind the 9OC though image. I will post the best from the rest tonight.

Last one. There is about 2X this amount I didn't scan. I will go through and pick 10 of the best for the 1st submission and go from there. I hope to average a 7 but I don't want 6's at all here's hoping I know what I'm doing.

Oh here is a scan of the off grade stars. Bradshaw is EX at best. Tarkenton and Lilly are EXMT but nice for the grade. The Sayers is badly trimmed and that does irk me as I didn't care about the stars but I didn't want trimmed crap.

Nice looking cards. I really like the '71 set.

Question: why spend $5 on grading each of these if you think that most will grade 'only a 7'? Can't you buy many 8's for around $10 and 7's for the grading fee of $5 on ebay? It just doesn't make financial sense to grade these unless they're lock 8's or the stars are 6-7 range, does it?

Not that there's anything wrong with submitting your own cards, but why spend the money having PSA confirm what you already know, that most are NM condition. I would only say this knowing that you could buy them already graded for less. Just curious.

Again, nice cards you have here. I hope you do well with your grades.

    Regards

Really just because I think a few could 8 and if I got 7's they would go into the set and I wouldn't be disappointed. Sometimes some low pops sell for more than I want to pay so if i submit them myself I just have the grading fee involved. Also for the off chance that I could sneak a nine in and pay for my grading fees is also a slight chance like the lottery but this has much better odds. In the end you can pick up 7's and 8's for 5 and under sometimes but there is still competition and at least this way I don't have to compete or spend over what I want.

  • I have roughly 135 or so cards from this set in psa 7/8. I have bought all of mine off ebay for around $5 per card even though I had many of my own that were probably psa 7's and maybe a few 8's. The good part of going the ebay route is I didn't have to get all the cards ready, fill in the subs, send them off, and wait forever for my grades. Once I get down to the last 50-75 I might send some of mine off to fill the holes of some of the low pop cards that don't pop up on ebay very often!! The competition on ebay seems to be very minimal for psa 7's and many can be picked up for $2-4 and 8's in the $5-10 range.. Whatever you decide to do you can't go wrong.. The '71 set is blazer!

Thanks, yeah it is a fun set and just as tough as the BB counterpart just not as many collectors.

Wow, that L/R centering must be a bear on those cards, not much room for them to look somewhat OC.
