Grapevine, TX show report

I took a lazy morning and arrived at the show about 10:30am after a stop at the bank to fortify the $14 I had in my pocket. I was going to meet author Doug Nyholm about noon, so I figured I could do a little shopping before we met up. I really wasn't looking for anything in particular, such anything that caught my eye at a good price. For some reason I started looking for 1909-S Indian Cents. That's one of those coins that I feel you can't go wrong on, if you get them at a decent price. I spied one in a PCGS XF45 holder and pulled up a chair and sat down. I asked the guy behind table if I could see it and he kind of chuckled and told me that was a pretty pricey coin. I stared (glared) at him for a moment and asked if he was going to let me see it or not. He pulled it out and handed it to me and I thought it was graded fairly and asked him what the best he could do on it. He quietly conferred with the other person, then this other person came over and coldly asked something like, "What do you need?". I asked him what's the best he could do on the coin. He made some stupid rude comment and said the price was what it was. I thanked him and walked off.

I'm 55 next month, dress fine, I'm friendly and polite and could spend any 5 figure amount I want. And this guy treats me like dirt! Flash back in time 30 years ago when I was 25, I looked 18 and would go to the Long Beach show with stupid money in my pockets. Back then I was young and looked like I couldn't afford gas money, but I could spend $10K-$20K and not bat an eye (see my sig line). I was used to being treated with a little skepticism back then, but not now.

Anyway, I mossy around and find a nice PCGS AU-50 1909-S Indian for less than the jerks XF-45. I wound up at another table that has a bunch of Bust Half Dollars. That's a series I have never really collected, but one in a PCGS AU-53 slab just called out to me. Stunning blue and gold rim toning and it kept saying "Take me home, take me home", so I did.

I then found Doug at Dick Osborne table and had to spend some time looking at early Bust Halves. Doug and I took off for lunch and spent quite a bit of time talking and he let me thumb through the rough draft of his next book on Mormon Gold and Currency. Looks like a great book. Back at the show I admired a stunning white 1893 Proof Set all NGC high grade. I was then getting ready to leave and spotted a 1938 D/S Buffalo in a PCGS MS67 holder. This coin was toned the most incredible gold and rose I had ever seen. The guy wanted big money for it, I hemmed and hawed and looked some more. This coin has a realistic shot at a 68. For some reason I just couldn't pull the trigger on it and left the show. I wasn't 5 miles away and I'm kicking myself for not buying it. When I got home I showed my wife the 2 new coins and told her about the Buffalo. My wonderful wife just looked at me and said, "Why didn't you buy it? You should go back and get it".

I'm calling the guy tomorrow to send it to me. You guys will not believe the coin when you see it.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Sounds like you got yourself a good one, and i'm not talking about any of the coins you picked up! image

Nice show report and as a young nut i can relate to being treated like crap. I too have a pretty big check book backing me up since i 'find' most of the coins currently in my dad's sets which aren't exactly chump change.
