A lot of things started or greatly expanded with the 1892-93 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The first souvenir postcards, the first popular commemorative U. S. stamps and the first popular U. S. commems all came from that event. Columbus was very popular in old days. Some wanted to name the country [USA] after him. Much of that halo has worn off, but the world might have become a very different place if it wasn't for him.
