1860-S Liberty Half Eagle - 21,200 Minted

PCGS has graded 28 of these coins and NGC has graded 53.
Heritage has sold 27 of these coins since their archives started in 1993.

Walter Breen once stated that this issue is actually unobtainable
in grades better than XF! Like most other San Francisco Mint gold
issues from this era, examples immediately entered circulation and
became quite worn, if they survived at all. (from heritage).

This could easily be the lowest graded and certified 1860-S around.
Low ball say what? :-P (more like all i could afford).

Feel free to guess the grade and add any thoughts. So much was
going on in the 1860s that i consider it a pivital year for our country.
Folks like Billy the Kid and Annie Oakley were just being born!

Here is the rest of my half eagles in my collection. thanks for looking.

  • F12. Really nice rare date coin, pre-civil war issue. To find one in any condition is a challange. My favorite years in history are 1866 (post civil war) to 1890. (The end of the Indian wars). Great coin thanks for showing.

I'll bet at least a couple fell into the dirt, and are still waiting for some lucky detectorist to find. image

Alas, I am on the wrong coast to find one of those, but here in GA I keep hoping to find something from before the Civil War with a "D" mintmark on it. image

The color looks quite warm and, if accurate, I like it very much. My grade guess would likely be VG8, but that doesn't mean it isn't a desirable coin.

I like the originality, even wear, and dark colored gold.

VG8. I like worn examples of rare coins such as this. The stories it could tell.

Looks like a nice "no problems, just honest wear" kind of coin.

    Nice newp!

It is an ANACS VG08. Quite a few people guessed it accurately
and I think 06-08 is an accurate grade also. The rims have to be
worn down much more to go below 06 and it has to have nicer
    rims to go above 08.

I hope to cross it to a PCGS slab in the future for the registry.

A genuine Civil War-era gold coin in original condition, and based on your solid research - not that common. I agree with lordmarcovan - what's not to like?
