1908-s Silver Philippine Pesos help

Hello everyone!

I don't collect world coins but went to a yard sale today and asked about "old coins"...man brought out a small box with 12 silver Philippine 1 Peso coins....1908-S....all circulated.

I did a quick google search but could not find much on them...could some kind soul educate me on silver content in fineness and %, weight and such...... so that I can figure out their value in silver....hope I didn't over pay??

Beware of Chinese-made counterfeits. There are a LOT of those out there. The fact that all of them in the box were 1908-S worries me.

I dunno what book that is, but melt value is more than that, now! Assuming they're real.

  • Oh yes..these are real....most well circulated.

I know silver...just not darkside coins.

This family's father brought these back when he was in the US military over there from 1907 to 1921. I also picked up most of his military paperwork, patches, photos, medals and such.

I hoard silver so just wanted to know silver content so I can figure value....before packing them away.

From the figures above (Weight: 20.00g, Composition: .800 silver) is my calcualtion of .5144 of silver correct per coin?

At current spot of silver then about $6.70 per coin?

By the way...THANKS...forgot to post that above!

I forget what the ASW of those is. But that sounds pretty close to the right spot value.

BTW, if you have a Redbook of US coins, these and all other US/Philippine issues should be listed in it.

Yes, I have the 2007, 60th Edition...but oddly enough...they do not list the SPECS: weight, fineness, etc for the Philippine coins....

well...at least my book does not.....normally after the brief history of each coin it gives the specs...but not in the Philippine section..starting on page 377....The peso is photographed on page 381....and it is mentioned that the size was reduced in 1907..but still no specs as in the other areas of the Red Book?image

    Hm.

Well, before they reduced the size on 'em, the specs were the same as a US silver dollar, I believe.

The later "small" pesos are a different story, though.

(Edit- sorry to be of little help there, but I'm at work without a Krause catalog and Googling seems to be of no help in determining their bullion value).

Hey, I DO APPRECIATE the help...if you have time later when you have your source material...I would be grateful for any additional info!

PS...love your holey collection....have watched your posts for several years on the US coin forum!

Thank you very much..that is what I have figured from answers above and a little more research.

Do you have any idea if these bring much more than just the bullion price of silver?

They should bring a little more than melt... after all, they're cool coins, and some folks have referred to them as "America's forgotten silver dollars".

I know I would pay a little above melt for them, anyway. Obviously, in better grade, they could be worth significantly more than melt.

Thanks for all the help.....I believe I may have overpaid...have no experience with darkside..but thought they were cool too.....

May keep them in my silver hoard...or may sell them.....will think about it.

    Thanks again!

Great find! Here's a rough price guide for the 08-S Peso:

    VF or less: Melt
    EF: $20
    AU: $35
    MS-60: $50
    MS-63: $150

thanks...yes, I do think I paid too much......I priced them when coming up with a price for all I was buying (coins and militaria) at $10 each (thought they were 90% silvers...and that they weighed a bit moreimage)

Most are VF or lower. 2 or 3 could go EF.

I do think they are cool looking though..I love the eagle/shield on the reverse.

    Thanks everyoneimage
