1947 KC Monarchs Team Signed and Game Used Ball. Opinions on value ?

Wondering if anyone might have an opinion as too the value of this 1947 KC Monarchs ball as well as the game used ball. I have never seen either a team signed Negro league ball or a game used ball. I also am posting a letter from Clifford (Connie) Johnson as well as some photos. I wrote to Connie Johnson asking him if he knew what this ball was. Below is a list of the players on the ball as well as their position and years they played for the Monarchs.

James "Lefty" LaMarque P 1941-49
Henry Thompson 2B/OF 1943, 1945-48
Willard Brown OF 1935-43, 1946-51 in HOF
John G Scott OF 1945-48
Hilton Smith P 1936-48 in HOF
Earl Taborn C 1946-50
Othello Renfroe OF 1945-47
Herbert Souell INF 1940-51
Red Berry P 1947
Ford Smith P 1941, 1946-48
Ted Alexander P 1943-47
Ted Strong INF/OF 1937-42, 1946-47
Clifford (Connie) Johnson P 1941-42, 1946-50
John Hergert Umpire ?
Howard Moldern Umpire ?

I also have a ball which I will post later. It is an official "Negro American League" ball. Written on it is "This ball made last out 9/2/47. 1 H of D vs Monarchs 8. Caught by O'Neill. Umpires Bill Kiefer-John Hergert"

I got both balls about 25 years ago. Believe it or not...my wife and I went to a Goodwill store here in Phoenix, looking for antiques when I saw these balls in a display case. Total cost $10.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks, John

  • Is the ball for sale? If it is let me know! The most important autographs on the ball are Willard Brown and Hilton Smith both Hofers. Another over looked and very rare signature on the ball is that of Ted Strong who died in 1951 and was a all star player. Nice find ! He was also one of the original touring members of the Harlem Globetrotters.
  • I love that minor league photo of Johhny Bench.

Did anyone mention that the O'Niel photo looks like it had a facsimile auto that someone tried to trace over??

Might have been a faulty pen. I've have some older autos like that. The player just started over, on top of the first attempt.

    For example:

  • The O'Neil is definately traced over
The Mays autograph was done with an old Flair pen

Flair pen? I'm not familiar with those. Thanks for the info. It's a beaut of an example of a Mays auto, all but for the "do over" part. I love it anyway. I'll Google Flair pen to find out more about it, but any other info you can share would be appreciated.

    Thanks.
