Since 1942. They also made some in 1943.

San Francisco made some in 1942, 1943 and 1944. image

During WW2 the US minted coins for a number of countries, both in Asia and Europe.

I believe we have members here who collect these US minted foreign coins as one of their sub-specialities. image

  • There's a government publication titled 'Domestic and Foreign Coins Manufactured by Mints of the U.S. 1793-....'.
Not sure when it was last printed. My 1972 138 page soft cover copy was issued from the Bureau of the Mint for 75c.

  • During WW2 US Soldiers were Over-sexed, Over-paid and Over Here.

Australia could not keep up with demand created by the influx of US service men and with the Royal Mint being broken up to several different locations we turned to the US to manufacture some of our coins.

After WW2 Australia reduced the silver content in it's coinage from Sterling to 50%, the old sterling coins were melted down and the resulting silver was shipped back to the US, around 5 or 6 million pounds worth from memory.

In many respects over the years I imagine that would still hold true depending upon the enemy du jour.

Australia could not keep up with demand created by the influx of US service men and with the Royal Mint being broken up to several different locations we turned to the US to manufacture some of our coins.

Anway, I knew the US Mint produced coins for a variety of countries over the years ... just that this is the first time I had heard about them producing coins for Australia.

  • As another example of the Australian coinage minted in the US, here's an item I sold on eBay a few years ago. Sorry for the small scans...that's all I have left of the coin, as I sold it in February 2003 to a bidder in Australia for about $135, I believe. It's apparently listed in some catalogs as a 1943-S/D mm overstrike. I had someone at Coin World check it out and he came back with the statement that it's more likely a "garbled" mm, but nonetheless it remains a fairly renowned variety for collectors Down Under, I gather.

    Here are the scans :

For those interested in the full list I have an Excel spreadsheet detailing all US made foreign coins. (LINK)

I'm not certain where I originally got that file, but the author has an article in Mint Error News reviewing the material which has a PDF version of the same spreadsheet

A forum member, Spinynorman, has a very nice collection of US minted coins for other countries - I have always been suprised at the size of the list of countries that the US has minted coins for.
