Just got back from the Sacramento coin joke.....uh... SHOW...I meant SHOW.

Room fulla people. Room also fulla some new dealers who ...well.. sheeze.
One of em had to use the grey sheet, 2 retail coin price books..AND.. the Redbook to come to a price that was enormously high for an attractive but fairly common coin.
I saw several people attempting to SELL stuff that just ...... "wasn't needed....er ....right now"... yet their prices on what they HAD seemed quite satisfactorily optimistic.
This is the kind of show that ...almost... sez "don't bother."
Bot nuttin.
Sold nuttin.
Interest, but no cigar.
And a pore soul trying to sell some bullion for CASH and a "dealer" explaining how he didn't have 4 grand WITH him.
uh.... OK.
Lots of raw and common stuff to make the room shine.
VERY little of much exciting. Well, actually none.

How many dealers were set up at the show?
Dr J
My omnicoin collection (or how my coin photography has progressed)
Is this a good place to insert an "excremento" joke?
Brother, it sounds to me like it was a room full of dealers that were ripe for pickin'.

Guess again. The only "regulars" were the guys who sell retail plus and never turn anything.
As far as "dealers" went.
T'was a full waste of time. MacIntosh was set up but he wasn't there. Table run by helpers and his son. Consequently, no early or rare stuff. Unless he's out.
Gene Bruder had nice coins. He always does.
The "strange" part was that nobody would offer a guy anything for his graded 1796 bust dollar. Sure, they may be "soft" but I would expect at least an offer.
Some of the people looked different and I know at least one was trying his first show just to try it. I would say about 25 dealers there. That one has been better before. At least excelsior normally brings nice overpriced stuff.
Macintosh's kid kept telling me to come to the real show in Nov. of that is the one he puts on. I actually do think that show will be better. Last year 2 guys there had much higher $$ stuff.
Authorized dealer for PCGS, PCGS Currency, NGC, NCS, PMG, CAC. Member of the PNG, ANA. Member dealer of CoinPlex and CCE/FACTS as "CH5"
He called the Sac show to ask for two coins . . .struck out on both.

Its funny you say that. I was at the Sacramento show and went by Mcintosh's table twice and both times his son was on the phone with his dad. I found a way to spend about a grand on some Jefferson nickels, thanks to Bruder.
IF I was a seller, I'd stick to the web, unless I was a dealer. The main thing is a you can use the coin shows as a way to evaluate the dealers.
But is was a good way to meet the local dealers.....
I will drive to any show in the SF Bay Area, Modesto and Long beach (these shows are all 100-400 miles from my house).
But I won't waste the time and gas to go to the Sacramento show at the Dante Club less than 45 minutes away.

What I consider to be a bad bourse is one where it seems everyone has raw, cleaned AU common date Morgans and the equivalent and not much else interesting. Maybe some slabs---> 1881-S MS64 NGC Morgans and similar. You find yourself lowering the bar to find something...anything...to buy and take home.

<< <i>Mac is one of the best out there: both on the buy side and the sell side. I don't know about all the other unnamed dealers up that way (except maybe Don Rinkor form Santa Rosa whom I also like) but know the kinds you are talking about. They are good for cherrypicking if their attitude lets you look at their coins closely enough. Sure, they'll charge 20% over greysheet in the grade above the coin's grade but, with the right pick, the spread for the variety can far exceed that.

Coxe,
You are correct!
Guys like Don Rinkor are top shelf, for what ever reason I have not seen him or other good guys like Bruce Braga at this show lately. Maybe I missed them
I actually collect mostly copper. Unfortunately there has been prenty of overpriced nicely cleaned inventory at this show in the past.

<< <i>good update... I have beem to shows like that. The dealers not knowing the price on their own coins is without consulting 4 guides is laughable. >>
I've talked to him before. I actually believe he would rather have someone STEAL a CASE of coins than mistakenly SELL one for a penny less than full bore.
Knowing this, I had his wife ask him the price of THREE coins.
OUT come the books, the sheets, the sharper pencil, etc.
Sorta comical to watch. He seems not to have a clue on any price at any time. And God forbid he should give a "reasonable" price. Why, the case contents could begin to dwindle and he might have to BUY something.
heh heh
