Slab photo's.... any photoshop and photo experts advice?

I want to remove the background from my photos leaving a clean look.

I've tried magnetic lasso on a white background. It turned out too jaggy around the slab edges.

I tried just simple cropping on a white background. I had too much trouble getting the coins spot on straight all the time.

IMO the best I've done so far is using a white cut-out aprox. the size of a slab placed behind the coin and then on a green background. Using the magic wand tool to take cut out the green area's. The results come out like this:

Other than the fact that I left a finger print on the slab, I am semi pleased with it.

Does anyone have a better suggestion though on how to get a clean looking photo of just slab/coin?
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

  • Try using the rectangular crop like you're doing, then the magic extractor to smooth the corners. Go to resize and note the height and width then cancel resize and copy the pic. Create a new box with the same measurements, selecting transparent, then copy the slab pic into it. Merge down the layers. You can then create a larger box with colored background around it if you want, or create one big enough for both sides of the slab.

  • Use "curves" to make your whites white. They will be easier to deal with once your color is corrected for.
