Lincoln cents in Dansco album's

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,754 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a complete collection of red cents from 1926 to date in ms 63 minimum, all very nice red in color. It is in a Dansco album in my tall safe in a relatively stable, dark location. Will they start to turn brown? Is there any way to slow down the process of browning? Am I worried for nothing?

  • I've had silver coins in Danscos for quite a while and have seen no toning at all

I have 8 full books of jeffersons (all dansco) and the coins are turning various colors after about 10 years.

not sure what effect it will have on copperimage

Personally I think it's crazy to keep copper in anything but inert plastic, and even then the environment matters since hermeticity is a relative thing. If you keep the environment totally dry, and free of oxygen, you can put them in anything. But even a little moisture, especially mixed with any temperature cycling, will cause paper to "outgas" and will tone your coins.

Maybe put them in a food saver bag if you are not going to look at them for awhile that should work. image

Actually that's what I was thinking about. Don't they have the ones that you can use a vacume cleaner and remove all the air?
I plan to put them away for the next few years.

Yes they will turn brown over time.
I made that mistake many years ago.
In my opinion, red copper should not be put in an album.

I must say that while I do not condone putting red copper in anything other than plastic, I have full red copper Lincolns in a Dansco album that after more than 15 years show not the slightest bit of tone. And for the record, I live in a 100 year old house heated almost entirely by wood stove thus the environment isn't anything special.

But again, I wouldn't condone this method of storage.
