Thin plaunchet is more valued then the thick plaunchet. image

LeeG has done a series of informative posts on many of the classic commemoratives but has not yet covered the Norse. That may be because it is not a true commemorative but a medal. As such, it is hard to find good info about them.

Here is an old post that linked all of Lee's posts but it is over a year old and probably needs updating.

  • These were ordered struck by the U S Congress. There were thin and thick planchets preapred and struck. There were 100 struck in gold.

There have been several offerings in past numismatic auction catalogues. I remember a Kurt Kreuger sale from the 1980s with a complete set pictured of the front cover. There were also singles offered in other sales. You just have to do some checking.

Unfortunately, I don't have the complete information at hand, this is just what I recall off the top of my head.
PM me if you are looking for U.S. auction catalogs
  • The thick is easier to find than the thin version.
I have chased after the thin but always low balled it and lost.
Yesterday I finally bit the bullet and paid up for one in the heritage auction
