Coin shop robbery suspect arrested and charged

KINGMAN - A Kingman man was indicted on charges stemming from robbery of a Bullhead City coin shop two weeks ago.

James Michael Kinney, 23, was indicted by a Mohave County grand jury last week on two counts of aggravated assault, theft and robbery. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday before Superior Court Judge Steven Conn and is being held in custody on a $250,000 bond. He is also being charged with another felony count of theft for a 2006 incident.

On the morning of Sept. 22, Kinney reportedly waited for a coin shop to open in the 1800 block of Highway 95. When the store opened, Kinney asked to see something in the back room when he allegedly choked the storeowner until he temporarily lost consciousness. Kinney allegedly fled with about $20,000 in rare U.S. currency and $200 in cash, according to the Bullhead City Police Department.

Coming to, the storeowner spotted Kinney flee in a red car and called police. Kinney’s car reportedly was then involved in a hit and run crash where a red car rear-ended another car waiting in the turn lane at Highway 95 and Verano Drive. Kinney fled on foot where he was captured by two men near a Bullhead City motel.

A local fisherman retrieved Kinney’s bag, which allegedly contained the stolen currency and the cash, from the Colorado River.

A Bullhead City police diver also searched the river and retrieved a surveillance tape from the coin store.

The storeowner was treated at the scene and the two occupants of the car allegedly struck by Kinney’s car were taken to a Bullhead City hospital where they were treated and released, according to BCPD.

Bullhead City police officers originally charged Kinney with attempted murder and five other charges.

I've been in that store a number of times, since I own property in the area. Bullhead City is right across the Colorado River from the Laughlin, Nevada Casinos. Great vacation area, but lots of "bad boys" hanging around in the shadows. Drugs, guns, outlaw bikers, more. I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner.
