Smoking crack at NGC?

LINK TO AUCTION

NGC has put "Genuine Money of the Bible" on this 4th Century Roman coin. The last book of the Bible was written around AD 95. There is no connection between this coin and the Bible. This is like taking an 1893 Columbian Half Dollar and putting "Used by Columbus" on the slab.

They meant specifically 'Genuine money of the bible... found in the desk of hotel 6 in Dothan, Al.'

sorta like the space dollar theme, but a little less notorious.

by "genuine" they only mean that it is not a fake coin. if that particular coin issue was not around during the time of the bible, then i can't say.

that's what i thought too, doogy, but I think 'genuine' is an NCS term. I know they are affiliated, but I didn't think NGC used it on their slabs - which sort of confused me more.

PCGS will use 'Genuine' too on some of their slabs; i.e. when they want to slab a problem coin and not pass it up for NCS (the competition) to slab and market. A good example was the 1943 US Lincoln cent in Copper that was just sold at Long Beach. It was badly damaged, and just had a 'Genuine' designation on it.

    Wow, that's pretty lame.

Would anybody like to buy a nice Uncirculated 2007 Lincoln cent for their Civil War-themed collection, hmm?

    No?

What do you mean, there's no connection? C'mon, Lincoln was president during the Civil War!

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe NGC is using the book by Kenneth Bressett, "Money of the Bible" (Whitman Publishing) as the basis for what they label Coins of the Bible.
