NEWP - 1749 sede vacante medal - Wurzburg

I took my chances on this 1749 Wurzburg medal on eBay to add to my small german states sede vacante collection. It has some bumps and bruises, but I like the look.

Does anybody have a book that references Zepernick identifications?

No references here, but I have to say I love Vatican coins and medals of any centuries, what great engraving and results!image

That's a cool hunk of silver, Brent! It could use an acetone soak, too image Fascinating area of numismatics, too. Would love to see an assembled set.

I think Roman is right about the acetone. Does anybody have any recommendations on acetone (i.e. specific products), duration of the soak, and what to use to clean off the acetone? Should I blot it or wipe it with a qtip/cotton ball/cloth, or just let it sit for a few seconds/minutes in a shallow dish? One more question while I am at it - is my wife's finger nail polish remover OK to use?

    Many thanks all.
  • Go to Home Depot and paint area, they have pure acetone for sale. Do Not use the wife's nail polish. Lay on clean cotton cloth and let air dry.
    The glass is half full!

However, i would advise you to buy the higher priced Acetone at an art equipment store. these types have far less impurities that may not be good for the coin. the stuff at Home Depot is the cheap contractor grade stuff that is not all that pure for something like this. just a thought.

    nice medal!!

    Very cool piece.

I had never heard of St. Killian. Did a brief websearch.

Has a neat look to it, that. Too bad the saint is faceless, but so it goes.

How come, Ricke? That brownish stuff on the surface looks like the kind of gunk acetone takes care of rather well. Brent, I use pure acetone sold in hardware shops. Once the coin is submerged, I swish it around a little then let it soak for a day, or so. The I change the acetone and repeat. Sometimes, if the gunk doesn't come off, I soak a Q-tip in acetone and roll it over the affected area.

Congrats on a nifty medal! Its always a bit jarring for us Vatican/Papal collectors to see that the Sede Vacantes were used by others.

I also look forward to seeing a posting of all your German SVs.

Thanks STLNATS! I have probably shared all of these with the forum at one point or another, but here are the few that I have so far. The Cologne/Koln piece is by far the toughest piece I have been able to find.

With the weak dollar and a disappearing coin budget, I am having limited success adding new pieces.

Very impressive when you see them altogether! In my case, I esp like the 1698 Osnabruck reverse with the chronogram date and the obverse of the 1787 Regensburg piece which almost looks papal!
