Rockies vs Brewers: Stats ?

jaxxrjaxxr Posts: 1,258 ✭✭
Tonight's one game playoff for the NL wild card berth will be entertaining, and all stats from that game WILL COUNT in the regular season .

The RBI title and a 20 win pitching season might be determined tonight.

Is this proper ??
The rule was implemented way back when, in a time when only the two best teams played post season BB, in the World Series. Baseball has changed, first into two divisions, then later changed to three divisions, and added a "wild-card" team . Now at least eight teams play post season baseball every year.
The one game playoff, for post season inclusion, has been around awhile, but was developed in a different era, under quite different cicumstances, to determine who will play in the world series.

Considering today's format, should a one game playoff, to determine an extra spot, to select a "wild-card, to finalize one of eight post season teams, be considered part of the REGULAR SEASON, and all stats be used to figure in any and all regular season records ??????
This aint no party,... this aint no disco,.. this aint no fooling around.

All you need nowadays is astericks. image
  • It's still part of the regular season - they are determining who gets to the playoffs based on tonight's game, so the stats should count towards regular season numbers.

No, as usual you have no idea what you are talking about.

I never said Maris 'cheated', I simply said that if you were going to use the 'feeling of the public' to deface a piece of American history (Bonds' 756th ball), then you must also do it to the likes of Maris' 61st HR ball (as the general public felt he 'cheated' because he had 8 extra games to beat the record).

I know it's tough, but how about getting your facts straight before you post.

At least Maris did it in a "REGULAR" season of which any and all players in the league had a similar chance. No one had an extra game.

This is NOT 1951 anymore, Bobby Thompson, times have indeed changed, baseball has changed greatly, the teams in postseason have quadrupled.

A regular season , and its stats, leaders, and records are / should be done in games originally scheduled. Any extra game, especially a wild-card type, is AFTER the regular season and will not finally determine the league's world series representative, as was the concept behind the idea.

He had more games to break the record! He obviously had a competitive advantage over Ruth!

Your words from the other thread, obiously you thought it was unfair then even though the entire league played in the same amount of games. This just proves that you just find the unpopular point of view and argue for it. We are all very impressed.

Apparently you aren't fluent in sarcasm.

This simply proves you enjoy taking quotes out of context without reading into what's actually being said.
  • this is a regular season game, not a post-season game so to speak, all stats count.
  • It really isn't that fair when you think about it, but when dealing with records there are so many things that are unfair to a player or generation that make this just another blip.

Basically we just have to live with it and take records for what they are; and not use setting a record as the main basis for measuring a players value.
