Canadian experts help, please. *Updated* Now with pictures!

Just had a call from a very small-time dealer in Erie that I buy some U.S. coins from, on occasion. Last time I was there, I saw an 1880 Newfoundland 50 cents that had "the look" that I like so much - nice dark, original patina and I would say XF40 grade. Knowing little about these, I passed on it. Today he told me that he had another Canadian walk through his doors, a 1880-H quarter in VF, which he claims to be a near-over-wide variety. He quoted me a price for both, which, after looking at 2008 Charlton, is way below the catalog.

I accepted and he's going to ship them out tomorrow.

What do you guys think? Do prices in Charlton reflect market?

I'll post pictures when I receive 'em (probably sometime next week).

EDIT: It took me 2+ hours to realize I have misspelled "please"...

If the grades are accurate, you did very well.

Don, when it comes to Darkside coins, the guy uses U.S. grading standarts. If my memory isn't failing, I remember discussing that half with him, finally agreeing on it being XF condition, overall. (without going into 40 vs 45).

It is a condition thing combined with the look of originality.image

Here's an example of his grading (please forgive the U.S. material), which just got graded XF45 by PCGS. He called it an XF and from what I remember, that 1880 had a very similar look and feel to it.

Fantastic deal if problem free and correctly graded.

So, the coins are finally here. A bit disappointing on the half - I remembered to be a strong XF, while it's actually not image . The 1880 Narrow over Wide turned-out to be correctly attributed, which makes me pretty happy.

Would love to hear your opinions on these.

Thanks, mrpotatoheadd - I've been looking for a grading guideline for these! So, what do you think? VF20's both?

    Newfie half VF20

Vickie 25c VF35, shot 40 if hint of lustre remains

I like the look, i.e. color of both pieces.

Borderline VF20 details, net F15 on the Newfie (I don't like all the scratches and hits, and that hair braid is REALLY worn). The Canadian half is a VF30 in my opinion. Both have very nice original color, especially the latter.

    Nice pickups and pics!

I think I'd go with the quarter at VF, but I'm not entirely sure about the half- much like just about everything else I see from Canada, every time I look at a coin, I seem to come up with a different grade. Noting for the record my lack of experience with Newfie issues, what concerns me about the half is the lack of detail in the hair braid loop under the ear and the leaves in the hair- as a WAG for a VF grade, I'd think one might expect that there be a little better definition of those features.

But then, that's just me. And if you asked again tomorrow, I might have a different thought on the matter. image
  • Half-definately not ef--but both coins would still look great in my collection--great acqusition no matter how you look at it.

Not so sure about the Half... terrific look for the quarter and it looks to me to be in the solid VF 30 range
