  • That's right, Brimley's coaching Purdue!

Apparently Quaker Oats weren't payin' the bills.
  • This weekend.........Ohio State beats Purdue, Wisconsin beats Illinois and you're back to the way the Big Ten is supposed to be.......Buckeyes, Badgers and Wolverines all undefeated and at the top of the conference. Whoever thinks Purdue and Illinois are going anywhere this year is crazy.

November 3rd is when the real fun begins. Ohio State at Wisconsin will probably decide the conference champ!

    This is probably true.

It's the Not So Big Ten. Who cares? I know there are people who do, but they are not big players on the national scene. Even their last two national championships are tainted.

Why are the last two National Championships by Big Ten schools tainted?

    1. Bogus pass interference call in the Miami-OSU game
    2. Officials ran out the clock in Michigan-WSU game when the clock clearly should have been stopped with time for one more play from the Michigan 30.
  • Sounds like this markj111 is a jealous SEC fan!!!

"they are not big players on the national scene" would mean what to you? You don't like them, your friends don't like them, so that means nobody in the country likes them?

  • I'm not an Illinois fan but dont count them out, the only game they have lost is to a very good Missouri Tigers team in their first game of the year.

I don't think you can honestly say Michigan and OSU's championship seasons are tainted because of a questionable call. Now if there were recruiting violations, that would be a different story.

I give Indiana a boat load of credit this year for playing with a degree of intensity that makes college football what it is. I wish them well this year. I think their quarterback is playing terrific.. congrats on a huge win over Iowa.

As for Illinois and Purdue. I think it is likely Purdue will loose to OSU... as will just about everyone else in the conference. I remain optimistic about the Illini... I think they can surprise afew more teams this year.

The amount of crying over Miami's pass interference penalty never ceases to amaze me. The bias of other fans and hatred of other schools combine with media myth to make this one of the biggest non-truths in collegiate sports history. In the interests of accuracy, once again (sigh), let's review:

    1) The call, technically, was incorrect. The defender held Gamble before the ball was released. That is defensive holding, not pass interference.

    2) The delay was due to the official's indecision over which penalty to call (holding or PI), not whether to call the penalty. He got the call wrong, but made the right decision to throw the flag. I was sitting on the 5 yard line on this side of the field and saw Gamble get mugged about 30 feet in front of me. Go watch the tape at super slow speed.

    3) Had replay existed at the time, the game would not even have gone to overtime. Gamble picked up a third down with 2:00 to go in the 4th, but officials ruled he went out of bounds prior to the marker. Terrible call that would've been reversed, and OSU would've run out the clock and won 17-14.

    4) Finally, to all of you fans who get some bizarre enjoyment over calling someone else's 14-0 perfect record "tainted", I encourage you to do two things. One, go back and review all of the games your team won, and for ANY of those games where your team benefited by an official's call, label them in your little sports history book as tainted. And two, check that record book while you're at it to see if your school has won any national championships.

There are few bigger jealousies in life than that of the success of someone else's favorite collegiate football program.

Illinois could indeed make a run with their schedule. At least until Nov. 10.

I was not at the game and I saw the game on TV like many folks did. While the call may not have be the best, I do not think it gives rise to say the Championship is tainted. There was 58 minutes of other activity that all of the sudden is ruled out as to why the game end the way it did. Sorry folks... I am not buying that. Miami of Florida or in Michigan's game, Washington State, had the opportunity to win the game and they did not.

As for the Miami fans that want to whine... all I can say is get in line. The OSU-Illinois game in Champaign that season went into overtime and OSU won 23-16 in OT. In overtime, Illinois scored touchdowns... both were called back. The second touchdown seemed to reflect that the Illini receiver caught the ball and his knee was down in the end zone. OSU won the game in OT 23-16. What if the Illinois touchdown was ruled a touchdown? It would not have changed the outcome. Illinois had the chance to win and they did not. That is the reality of competition and excuses for calls do not change the outcome.

Well said, coinkat. I remember the OSU-Illinois game as well, great point about that.
