Simple solution for the Variety Question

Someone was saying simple is better. Well the easist solution to this is to make TWO SEPARATE SETS, one with varieties and one without. If you want to use the "serious" collector line, well a serious collector of a coin collects both Business Strikes and Proofs, so why are they in separate sets?

So why penalize someone who does not consider varieties as part of a complete set?

While I would love to own a 55DD, I would have no place to put it, because none of my many different types of albums have a place for it! What about the 22PL, which one? What about the PoorMans DD, it is a DD by definition?

The 38 D/S buffalo is another (as are the RPM Jeffersons). These are not expensive, even in upper grades, but I have never seen a hole in an album for them.

Why make something that should be simple so hard? Just make two sets, then you do not need to be flipping a coin to determine what variety to include.

So would a collector have to have all the attributed varities IAW CONECA or just the ones the big dealers have in stock and need to push? If I were a varity collector I would want all 50+ varities for the 1945 P,D,S Lincolns for example.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Dog,
I was sort of thinking of one set the way it is, and the other would remove all the optional flags. I don't think you can get all of the CONECA varieties listed on a PCGS holder (can you?). I would think they would do the 1982's (7 types, not all varieties) though.

  • A simpler solution would be to stage a big-time arm wrestling competition to determine the outcome of this obviously controversial question.

You get all the people who want varieties made mandatory on one side and those that don't want them on the other. Then work your way through the pack until you have a champion. Who could argue with that?

No, on second thought, those variety guys (and gals) have been hauling around a bunch more coins and probably have bigger muscles...

P.S. No, don't have two registries (with and without the varieties).

dbldie55 since you asked PCGS would only have to put UVC 187 on the slab for the 1945-D Lincoln for example.

Any Lincoln collectors would know that is the model D/D North, Rarity: URS-6 Mint State: URS-3. Markers: Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed) Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed) Stage C: Die scratch from tie East to rim – LDS Reverse is LDS Stage D: Die crack on forehead – VLDS Die scratch almost worn away Light die crack on T of CENT – VLDS

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • doubleddie55/55: Two Registries?! One for the kids that drove to school in cars they bought using money they earned over summer vacation- the cool kids who played sports and dated the cheerleaders.

And, a second registry for all the kids who wore braces until they were 17 and road the little stubby yellow school bus. The ones in "Special Ed". The ones who played Nintendo and made prank phone calls on Friday nights in the basement of their family home. The ones who's parents still had a babysitter watch over, even at 15.
Ok, I get it. We'll sooth you. You may have your "second" registry. Just don't expect the serious collector to take you or your 'second' registry seriously.
