Ever spend 3 hours at a coin show and spend $20

Yeesh looked at way too many coins and only picked up one coin for my type set. Liked the color and what appears to be some sort of date doubling. Not sure about that cuz I know zippo about Peace Dollars. The dealer I bought it from swears its a VAM but he knows not much more than me about Peace VAMS.

Once spent 6 hours once at a coin show and only purchased a single coin for $7. However, it wasn't as nice as yours.

3 hours and $20.00...that's a great show for me- I cherrypick!

Worse. I've driven 3 hours each way, spent 6 hours at the show and bought nothing. However, I did have lunch with a bunch of forum members, so that made the trip worthwhile image

I was so close on a 91-CC Morgan, but the dealer wouldn't budge off his price because it was a 63 in an OGH and he stood firm at $850. I got up walked around and decided to duct tape the check book. image

I spent four hours at Long Beach yesterday - all I bought was a 2007 Silver Proof Set. Last time I went to Long Beach I bought nothing. Time before that I bought a book on California Fractionals. Might not sound like I did too good, unless you ask my wife for her opinion. image

But four shows back I bought a Pan Pac $1G on impulse; me = image wife = image

I find tht the problem with some shows is that dealers are actively buying for want lists, so a good variety of fresh coins dont ever make it to the cases. The same old stuff is sitting gathering dust.

A pointer for all those dealers out there - rotate that inventory, show some fresh inventory every month. Not just the tired old cr%p. You may even get a new customer on that want list!!!
  • Yeah, I've done that several times, both are regional shows and FUN....walked around for hours and bought little. This year I spent more than ever at FUN with a grand total of $1600 in purchases, last year was $330.

You would think prices would be good at shows, since there is a cost associated with being there for the dealer, but generally I find them to be overpriced. FUN is more of a wholesale show anymore. Dealers coming to trade with other dealers for their local collectors.

Well, the good news, the dealer was right, it is a VAM, but then all Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. image I think that the doubling that I am seeing on LIBERTY is mechanical, very common on Peace dollars. So the bad news is that it's not worth any premium, unless I am missing something, which is possible....image

Strike doubling there, extremey common on the obverse for the date and the series as a whole.

Been there on the bourse time and nothing to buy. The funny thing is when you go to a small show that is more aligned with a different sort of a collector but you still try to buy something, anything. It can be fun. I'll sit and page through those 2x2 album folders of shield nickels, 2 cents, ... looking for interesting DDs, cuds, breaks, ... or end up cherrypicking obviously cleaned silver dollar VAMs I know I'll never unload profitably.

And how did you feel about that decision an hour after you had left the show?

As for spending time at shows and not buying anything...I've done that a few times. More than once I've spent literally all day at the Baltimore show and not bought any coins. That's not usually a bad thing...It's only bad when you regret not buying a particular coin and that regret lingers after the show.

Yeah, 3 hours and $20 is not bad. Generally if the show is crappy I'll buy 2 or 3 common date raw Peace dollars in BU+. Can't go wrong with them.

What's scary is when you've got a pocketful of cash and have gone to a show several days in a row... that can lead to some not so bright decisions

Midlife I made the right decision, in no way would that coin upgrade its a 63 all day long and a $575 coin. Let him sit on it for a long time and he will, I've known him for many years. Coxe thanks for confirming what I thought about the Peace dollar. I must of looked through 60 or 70 looking for a 1E in his cardboard box. The local coin shop owner here invited me to go through his hoard on Monday so I will be at it again. image I think I need to unretire or find a serious second hobby.
