1837 Reeded Edge Bust Half ... looking for opinions

My buddy picked this coin up today and would like some feedback on it. He paid $200 for it thinking it was EF45 ....... what says you. Also, anyone see any any interesting variety?

    My opinion....looks like a $100 coin.

Not sure about the EF45 grade.

    You be the judge:

VF-20 Some definition of detail, all lettering full and sharp
VF-25 Slightly more definition in the detail and lettering
VF-30 Almost complete detail with flat areas
VF-35 Detail is complete but worn with high points flat
EF-40 Detail is complete with most high points slightly flat
EF-45 Detail is complete with some high points flat
  • I told him that was one thing that I didn't like about the coin. It's too white in the fields and too dark in the recesses........
Saying that though, I'd still love to have it in my 7070..........

It's a cleaned VF likely worth about Greysheet VF bid of $90.

Agree that it has been cleaned. But looks like dip and not the harsher type of cleaning. Put it in an album and give it about twenty-five years or so to develope back it's tone.
It will still be in the VF grade group. And with the die cracks it still has a lot of appeal.
  • Boy that's a CLEAN one !!!

What is it? Variety JR-6? Heck if I know.

I've got this mint state 1988 First Edition of Reiver's Variety Identification Manual for the Reeded Busties.

...but I don't collect these coins.

I guess I either need to learn how to read and understand this book OR I need to sell the book?

I just haven't gotten around to either one of the above.

I sold him a beautiful proof like shield nickel for $20 a while back but other then that, I have GIVEN him quite a few coins. He's only been collecting for about a year now and has learned a LOT but he is still an "impulse" buyer ....... like I am image
