PCGS grading question: for coins with nicely toned reverses......

SeattleSlammerSeattleSlammer Posts: 10,048 ✭✭✭✭✭
.....is it possible to request from PCGS at time of submission that the coin be holdered reverse-facing-forward? If yes, how is this requested?

Or is it just arbitrary which coins PCGS holders reverse-facing-forward?

Thanks for any info regarding your experience with this.

  • I have a franklin reverse side up the obverse is not toned at all either:

You should call customer service pretty sure they will give you the right answer.
  • I have also wondered about this. Hopefully someone here will give us the scoop rather than having to ask c.s. It has been mentioned, I believe. My guess, just write it in big letters across the form, maybe in the other services area? Or down through the middle of the service level part? Or both to be sure.

  • FWIW, I have a PCGS Morgan $1 that was slabbed reverse side forward per the request of the submitter. The reverse is pretty rainbow toned while the obverse is untoned.

Yes, I have a couple reverse-facing-forward coins, too.
But HOW do you request for it to be holdered reverse-facing-forward?

I know that at one time PCGS would do this, as would NGC, but I do not know if that is currently the case. Likely the most current answer would be obtained from PCGS customer service, though I do not know if there is a printed option on the submission form for this work.

  • Now, tell us how we request it.

I talked to CS and she told me that they generally just do this for State quarters. I remarked that there are a lot of reverse-facing-forward PCGS coins out there of other denominations, but she just said that PCGS likes to stick to a standard of handling/placing the coins in the holders.....?????

Anyways, I suppose I'll just write it in somewhere on the submission form, and hope for the best. The ones I'm sending are crossovers, currently reverse-facing-forward in ANACS and ICG holders. Hopefully whomever grades them will think, "hey, these sure are great on the reverse, lets flip 'em!" But there doesn't appear to be any sure-fire way to request this.......
  • Oh, so the real answer is no they won't. That's very different than yes they will, but who's to quibble? Carol, if you are reading these, can you clear it up? There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of reverse holdered toners out there in pcgs slabs, recent slabs I mean. We have all seen them.

Just write somewhere on the form which coins you want holdered reverse up; such as please holder line items 1, 2, 5 and 7 reverse up. Thats all you need to do. I have 40 or 50 coins holdered that way. I recently had a whole blue boxful reholdered; ALL reverse up. On a few past submissions I had quite a few come back reverse up without my requesting it.

    Bajjerfan, thanks.
In the past, specifically where on the form have you written this request?
    Under "C. Additional Services"?
  • i wouldn't rely completely on any answers provided by customer service over the phone.

Generally in that BIG open space in the middle ; somewhere prominent so that they won't miss it.

I have submitted consistently and always request reverse toners (and one 68+ reverse Morgan) to be placed "Reverse Out".

Those are the words you use . . . place them right on the line to the right of the date/MM and I also write it on the sticker that is on the 2.5 x 2.5. I usually send 3-4 out of 10 in to have them holdered "Reverse Out" and they have never failed me. I would believe PCGS would like the visually appealing side of the coin displayed (my thought--not fact). Many ask me how it is done (I sell a few once in a while) and it never ceases to amaze me that every dealer I know asks "How did you do that???" It's not tough.

Simple. On every line just write " HOLDER REVERSE OUT ". For good measure, I highlight it in yellow and then also do the sticker thing.

I've done some tab-toned Commems, toners of all denominations (Mint Set kaleidescope reverses on Lincolns are killer), and a couple reverse-outs for type (Lib Nick Ty 1, Buffalos).
