I'd guess it was just luck of the draw since these were a much higher percentage
of circulating pennies at the time. A coin collector though might be inclined to use a
scarcer date with no premium just to have a more unusual item and this is certainly
pretty unusual. A used to have the same one rolled on a 3c nickel but it was a com-
mon date.

I had a Columbian Expo elongated cent once, but I don't remember the date. It was on a fairly common 1880-something Indian cent.

You have to remember, in 1893, the 1885 nickel might not have been known to be rare, or known by the person who had the nickel to be a scarce date. They likely pulled a nickel out of their pocket and had it elongated (for the pricely sum of 50 cents). >>
Was it that much! 50C was a good chunk of change in 1893!
