1921-D Morgan Unicorn D Vam question? Pics added

Ok I admit, I know very little about morgans and even less about vams. Today I purchased a stunning MS65 21-D in an old PCGS holder for my Denver mint type set. Even the old holder is pristine so not a coin that has been passed around among dealers or collectors. I noticed a few die cracks when I purchased it but thought nothing of it. Sparking my curiousity I decided to research these cracks and after reading old threads on this forum found "Vamworld" a great website with tons of info. To make a long story short I have a Unicorn D vam 1N. Looks to be in early to mid die state. There is some cud, but not as thick as the letter "D" as in some of the pictures. My question is, should I send this to PCGS for reslabbing identifing the Vam? Is there much of a premium over normal greysheet prices to even mess with? I like the old holder. I did notice in the registry 1921-D vam sets that only 2 of these have been certified MS65. Cool coin regardless! Tomorrow I'll take some pics and post if they turn out. image

    Herb,

That is a neat coin. Have you posted that one before?
  • Yes Sir,

Posted before...................bought the coin because it's rare, just check on ebay, lotza sellers selling the rare 1921 dollars,
the toning caught my eye also. The unicorn part was a bonus.

Sorry oldwestgold for hyjacking this thread.....................................if nothing else, it's at least getting ttt and hopefully the pros will chime in about the 1n.

21-D in nice 65 is tough enough as it is. VAM 1N is one of the varieties that PCGS will recognize, although I'm not sure what the die state cut-off is for PCGS to acknoledge it as VAM 1N. There is a premium over "normal dies" for thsi variety. DennisH has all the raw data on sales of this variety and will probably post them. As for whether or not to reholder it, I'd say leave it in the old holder if you prefer it there. Unlike grades, variety attributions are objective (well, this one is, anyway). If, after posting pictures, everyone's telling you to resubmit for 66, then it might be worth your while.

VAM 1N is a desireable coin, especially in Mint State grades and brings a healthy premium. Prices are unpredictable, however, depending on whether 1 person is looking for an example when one comes up for sale, or if two or three people are. Here's the latest transaction data that I have:

    1921-D 1N 65 PCGS Jul-07 E $511
    1921-D 1N 63 raw Mar-07 E $150
    1921-D 1N 62 PCGS Sep-07 PP $150
    1921-D 1N 62 PCGS Apr-07 PP $150
    1921-D 1N 62 raw Jan-07 PP $125
    1921-D 1N 58 PCGS Apr-07 E $128
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thanks for the info guys. I've learned alot in the past 24 hours into the mysterious world of Vams. For now I plan on keeping the coin slabbed as is, and will be tucked away with my other D mint type coins.
