No SMR for Parkhurst Wrestlers Nagurski?

I can't seem to find 1955 Parkhurst Wrestlers in SMR anywhere. I know, I know. It's a pretty obscure issue for the most part, but it does have a Bronko Nagurski card. I recently submitted mine, purchased as part of a complete set in Canada many years ago, and received a PSA 7 on it, which was exciting since there have only been three graded and the other two are PSA 2s. I'm trying to figure out if I want to send in any more of the Parkhurst Wrestlers cards I have, but since they are not in SMR and I hardly ever see them for sale, I have no idea about the values. I figured it was worth grading the Nagurski, but I'm not sure about the others. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

  • By the way guys, even if it isn't very valuable, I was just excited that it didn't come back "evid trim," "recolored," "minsizereq" or all of the above!

So instead of you pulling a value out of thin air you would rather PSA do it for you? Trust me, you're better off coming up with your own prices for the cards.

I have two of the Nagurski cards but they are in low grade.....if I took the time to figure out how to post pictures it would be helpful ......

If you google it you will see what others sell it for. I've noticed one guy wants 89.00 for what he call a VG example.

IMO a PSA 7 should fetch a decent amount.

Quite honestly, I could see them doing this is an upcoming SMR...

My take on the SMR value is that it is in PSA's best interest to keep the prices down for insurance reasons.

If a high grade example of this card was presented right it will sell for big money. There is a PSA 8 in the population report, I think it would go for $1,000+ or more.

That is a $400 or higher card for sure.

He has a football card that sold for $24,000 recently and trust me with the limited run of these cards it won't take many buyers to drive this card up.

This is a card to watch I promise.
  • Why would he need to wait for PSA to pull prices out of thin air! Dpeck is here to do it for them! Haha. So you have a card of a football legend as a wrestler produced by a Hockey card maker....this card is rarerer than the 82 wrestling set, $1000.00!

I would not say this set is more rare. I would say it is much more rare to find a NM-MT card from this set. There is only one card ever graded mint. If you see many of these examples pop up on EBAY many are in VG condition and worse.

When the vast majority of the cards are this far away from mint a high grade example could sell for a good amount.

A PSA 7 Vern Gagne sold for $80 about six months ago. His wrestling cards do not sell for much. I feel very confident that the one PSA 8 would sell for a great deal and it would most likely be a football collector or a broad collector in general.

The Bronko Hagurski card is the one card from both sets that can sell for a lare amount raw other then perhaps Lou Thesz or The Crusher and the auctions I have witnessed he has sold for as much as $70 in similar shape to was mentioned above.

    Nagurski

Many big time football players landed in pro wrestling. They imediately had the ability to use their football name and cross market themselves into pro wrestling.

Kind of like how Dusty Rhodes quit the Giants and became a wrestler?

Perhaps, I am not aware of his football career.

There have been tons of ex football players compete in the ring. Whether it was college, the CFL, USFL, or NFL.

There is a very lengthy list but I think Nagurski may have had the best pro football career of any of the others. Many left becuase they were either hurt or not a star.

A recent big time wrestling star was Bill Goldberg. From what I understand he was not that big time of a player in the NFL and used his size and look to cross over and made it big in wrestling.

  • wrestlingcardkingwrestlingcardking Posts: 4,555 ✭✭✭✭
Nagurski actually held the title in wrestling....his Dixie Lid from 1938 also mentions him being a wrestler in addition to being a football player. I would say that Dusty Rhodes in football was a bit obscure.

I'm sorry. Dusty Rhodes MVP of 1954 World Series. At least I think he was MVP. Too lazy to look it up.

  • Hi all,
I am the owner of the '54 Parkhurst Nagurski in Psa 8 (highest and 1/1). It was originally in an SGC 88 holder and was submitted as a crossover. It was successfully crossed with the one attempt into a psa 8. It is available and I am currently fielding offers. Feel free to email me at hbsturn@hotmail.com or PM me.

I think the PSA 8 Nagurski is a solid value at $810

I wonder what that makes my 6 with only one other 7 and the one 8.

Will he hard to find too many at 6 and above in my opinion......

The Nagurski PSA 7 that was on ebay sold privately. I am unsure of the final price on it. It is good to see this card having some movement by collectors.

I think the PSA 8 sold for $1,000 last time. I do know Knapp bought it from Probstein.

Here is the one from EBAY.
