ever find yourself imagining a mint mark is there?

am i the only one that finds themself looking too hard at a coin on ebay (or other online venue) trying to imagine that i'm seeing something that my rational brain tells me is not there??

this is especially true in the case of an extreme rarity.....i know many times ive had to do a double take on a 1912 V nickel labelled as a D mintmark; thinking for a second that i cherried an 's' mint (very mushy mm's that year doesnt help)

well, sometimes i find myself doing it with what would be 'ultimate cherries'

example:

yeah right, like the grading company would have missed it too--keep dreaming!!

now, i know it a philly..........................................but, there's a dark formation (at least on my monitor) that i swear is in the perfect shape of an 's'
again, my rational side knows i'm just crazy but this thread was started just to see if anyone else finds themself doing this (and as a followup question is this OCD??)

just curious and cant sleep tonight

Happens to me a lot, and it happened again yesterday. (Although in that particular case I was pretty sure there was no mintmark on the coin, I thought I saw a "VDB" on the reverse).

Being a detectorist who sometimes digs rather lumpy ("warty") copper, you can bet that many's the time I have looked extra closely under the wreath of a 1908 Indian cent, at what I thought might be a tiny "S", but which turned out to just be a blip of corrosion!

As to that 1894 dime, well, it's a business strike, and I think all the 1894-S coins were proofs, weren't they?

But yeah... I see what you mean... the eye sees a phantom, ghostly "S" below the wreath there... a little too big, but it really looks like an S-shape.

    You're not crazy.

Or maybe you are, and I am too. image

One time I had a vivid dream that I found a 1942 nickel.
I turned it over and there was a little "D" at the lower right of the building.

And there was also a big "D" above the dome !

    Heck, I find myself imagining that's really a 66!

  • It does happen. I found a '32-D AU50 quarter in a '32 holder and bought it for $30.

I was really curious as to why a person would slab the coin in that grade so I checked the back!

  • I do. Back in May, I bought an 8-coin lot of 1908 IHC's from a local auction for $7. That in itself was an ok deal. However, on the reverse of one - I swear - is a piece of an S. The coin had been scratched at the lower center reverse, so it is hard to say, even with a loupe. So, I pull it out every so often to check again, all with the same results. image
