1796 quarters as popular as ever, and still going up

The AU 58 in the Goldberg sale brought $75,000 hammer, for a total price realized of over $86,000. While a nice AU coin, with original toning, the PCGS guides for this date are:

AU55-57,000, AU 58-65,000 and MS 60-72,000.

And just last year a comparable AU 58 brought $55,000.

This date remains in high demand, with pricing continuing to reach higher limits.

Truly choice coins of this date with terrific, original surfaces and positive eye appeal are quite scarce. However, previously manipulated, high grade coins or abused, very low grade examples are relatively common by comparison. The mid-range grades, which had been priced within reach of many collectors until five or six years ago, have moved strongly up in the last few years and I do not see them retreating to previous levels. This is too bad for folks who are working on a complete type set and who are making a concerted effort to get each coin. If I had to purchase the coin that I purchased in 2001 at price levels that would be competitive today then there is no way that I would own such an example.
