How does this happen???

I won an eBay item Sunday night and the total was around $165.00. The seller only accepts PayPal, which is my usual method of payment anyway. I was waiting until Thursday (tomorrow) to send the payment because I am waiting on an echeck to clear that I received and was going to use those funds to pay for it. I probably should have emailed the seller to make him aware of my intentions, but I didn't. I have had no contact with the seller since winning the auction. He hasn't even sent me an invoice. When I got home today, the item that I won was setting on my doorstep in a FedEx box. I hadn't even paid for the item yet, but the seller mailed it on Monday. I thought that maybe that I really had paid for it, but just forgot that I had, so I checked my PayPal account and sure enough I hadn't sent payment yet. My question is, where would the seller have gotten my name and address in order to mail the package??? I know you can request bidder/seller contact information, but I know he didn't do this because I would have also received an email from ebay with his contact info. Any thoughts?

This is a strange one. If he marks it as payment recieved he can see your address. I would suggest still paying for the item and advising the seller of his mistake. Maybe he will cut you a deal. I know in the past with some of my auctions I would send the item out before recieving payment on good faith and saving my arse an additional trip to the PO. But those auctions were for far less than $165.

    Hi David,

Check your ebay preferences (address) and you probable have your name and address selected to be forwarded to the seller when you win an auction... ebay notifies the seller with your info after the auction ends (congratulations your item has sold message).

The seller may have sent the item thinking he had received your payment and someone else (who paid) won't be getting their item unless you pay (which I'm sure you will). Then again, the seller could simply have too much money and doesn't really want anymore... so, send the money to me please.

  • So inquiring minds want to know: "Are you gonna pay'em?"

Just kidding of course, I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't.
  • Here's the item.

No, I'm definitely going to pay. I went ahead and left him feedback on it. I'll probably email him tomorrrow and tell him of his mistake.

You obviously have leverage in this deal. I wonder what his response would be once you pay him and inform him of his possible oversight. Perhaps you two will get a good laugh out of it and most importantly, you will be showing him that decent people do exist who prefer to take the high road.

  • Actually recently had this happen with a 67. Seller sent the card and a bonus graded 67 before I paid. Made me feel kinda bad for being a slow payer but fired off the payment and a thank you for the freebie.

  • When I started to read your first lines and then saw FedEx box, I already knew who the seller was.
I had the same experience with him.
On the positive side, its the first time I ever paid 10.00 shipping and didnt complain when a person uses next day delivery
