"The finish they used prior to 2003 was a lot nicer than what they use now. It sort of looked like a reverse proof... "
I have a 2001.....Yes I agree (save the face of lady liberty). So that stopped in 2003? no wonder no one cares about the non W uncs anymore. You would think the mintage numbers on those should crash due to the "so what" factor.
Platinum's wear- and tarnish-resistance characteristics are well suited for making fine jewellery. Platinum is more precious than gold. The price of platinum changes along with its availability, but its price is normally slightly less than twice that of gold. In the 18th century, platinum's rarity made King Louis XV of France declare it the only metal fit for a king.
Sometimes I wonder just how scarce platinum really is. I once looked up how much platinum was 'above ground', and it seemed to me to be quite a bit. Enough to make me wonder if the price was worth it.....
Regardless... I have considered purchasing a 2007 plat coin or two... but to tell the truth, I think this years design is just plain UGLY. Several time I went to order... but then got another look at the coin.... and just said no way! Been getting spoiled by some of the other coin designs, like last years plat, and the Jefferson Liberty gold....

Gold is great, but platinum has "hella" industrial uses. HELLA. And the folks over in India are using it like crazy for jewelry.

Just bought the $50 Uncirculated to go with the 10th Anniversary Set $50 half ouncers. I was going to hold off but not now. If they offer the $50 uncirculated in the Anniversary set I'll have 30 days to return it. Hopefully by then they will announce what will be in Anniversary set. Everyone is saying it will be a reverse proof and a regular proof, but who really knows?
I just picked up two 4 coin sets and two 1 oz'ers after I saw the mint suspended sales on gold coins. Hope this works out. I will have A LOT of explaining to do if I have these shipped! Thank goodness for the no questions asked return policy. And if I refuse the shipping package, the mint even refunds my shipping charge!

Dont panic guys , the proofs are still $200/oz OVER spot prices , the mint wont be taking these down in any hurry . The gold unc were only $30 over spot when they stopped them.
Anyone comes in to support the dollar ( and someone will) then we could lose that $120 in a months time. And this from a LOOOONG time precious metals Bull...I am cautiously loving this.

Okay, some pics....................
I knew it would happen.
Amazing! I didn't realize that all the coins in the 2004 platinum proof set were the same size!

Did the US Mint raise the price on the 2007 platinum sets in the last couple of weeks?

Platinum looks promising, but it's not a sure thing . . .

multiply number of grams by .035 to get ounces.
