Bought a Jeff. First Spouse Set on Ebay...Question

RichRRichR Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭✭✭

To replace the set my wife ordered (that was cancelled by the Mint)...paid $1050 today for a sealed Mint box containing a gold Jeff Spouse proof and an Unc. Didn't think it was too unreasonable a premium. Not a flipper...intend to keep this set with the other two I was able to order directly.

What are the chances these coins will appreciate significantly?

Good job I would keep going if you can. Only time will tell in a month or two but you need them to sell them. image

    Hoard the keys.
  • Given the maximum mintage of 20,000 for each, the Proof has a better chance of appreciating considerably given the historically record low gold Proof commemorative mintage. The same mintage for the Uncirculated is rather high for a gold uncirculated commemorative type. Also, the Mint has yet to decide if the mintage will be increased for the 2008 spouses. They have stated they may do so after evaluating sales of the the Liberty and Madison spouses. If that happens, it would create instant keys out of the first four.

I was kinda surprised. I was looking at multiple listings when this new one suddenly appeared as a Buy It Now for (only) $1050...I actually thought it might be a scam...but the feedback and history was very substantial, so I crossed my fingers and hit Buy. Guess they just didn't want to be greedy...

The ironic thing is that this set will probaby be in my hands before my orders directly from the Mint!

From reading Coin World...it seems that the Jeff. Proof sold out first, followed a couple of hours later by the Unc. I thought this was odd since it was my belief that the 40,000 total mintage was going to be apportioned as the overall Proof/Unc order split warrented.

But Coin World made it seem like the Mint had pre-produced a set number of both coins and cut off sales for each accordingly.
  • IF

If the mint were to increase the mintage for the First Spouse series, and 2007 First Spouses were to become the “keys”….

Given that many collectors are looking to assemble a subset of LIBERTY spouses, that makes THIS Jeff spouse the potential most desirable of the whole 15 year run!

    Right or Wrong?

Yes, it states on the Mint order page the maximum mintage is 20,000 of each type for a total of 40,000 between both.

I agree, given the immediate sellout at 1 per household, the Thomas Jefferson Liberty has the best potential of appreciating out of the Liberty spouse subset at this point.
