Red Sox magic number drops to 5 with NYY loss today.

That was a huge game today. A win by NYY and they would've been one back with 6 to go. Now it's two and a Boston win/NYY loss tomorrow would put the Sox in the driver's seat to wrap it up.

Nice to see Toronto being an equal-opportunity spoiler. Hopefully the woeful O's will wake up now.
  • IMO, today's game was a crossroads game for NYY. A win and they would have continued to push hard for the division title. But with a loss now, 2 games back in the loss column with all 6 on the road while Bos has all 6 at home, they'll likely start packing it in, and setting their rotation, etc. as the Wild Card.

It is amazing really. Nobody has a clue who will be playing who just yet. I have to admit that the division title became an afterthought after the Yanks took a commanding position in the wildcard race. If there were no wild card these games would be HUGE. Each and every Yanks and Sox game would be HUGE. That is not even close to being the case on either side right now. Simply, these games are NOT huge. I am not sure if this is good or bad? Weird

  • Weird indeed. If the season ended today the Yankees would play Cleveland and the Red Sox would play the Angels. It might be a contest to see which team loses the division because I don't think either team wants to play the Angels in the 1st short 5 games series. The Yankees are 6-0 against the Indians this year. The Yankees had The KC Royals' number in 1977 and 1978 and simply could not beat the Yankees but then in 1980 KC swept the Yankees 3-0 to finally win the ALCS so maybe this is the year the Yankees beat the Angels. image Bottom line if either the Yankees or Red Sox can't beat the Angels or Cleveland they don't deserve to go to the big dance. Regular season doesn't matter at all. Just look at the 2006 Yankees who totally dominated the Tigers in the regular season but lost the ALDS.

The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

Wow, thanks for that amazing piece of information...you mean if team A doesn't beat team B in the playoffs they don't get to advance?

    This must be new.
  • Who am I? Puffing her chest she said "The Marinateds have a 3 game lead over the Yankees in the Wild Card Race. I am so proud of my Marinateds!"

  • Gotta love when someone drops a moronic piece of 'information' (like 'they have to beat that other team to get to the world series!'), then get all pissy when they are called on it.

Dude, you made an idiotic statement, I called you on it, just admit it and move on.

That is why I don't think it will matter who the Yankees face. That being said makes the East title just about meaningless at this point.

  • Agreed. The Yanks have to get the job done whomever they play.

Your intense dislike of Brian is noted, and in many ways certainly justified. That having been said, it's high time that someone informed you that you've used the word 'penultimate' incorrectly in your sig line.

Hint: 'penultimate' and 'ultimate' do not mean the same thing.
