Matte Proof Lincoln Cents 1909-1917 by Leonard Albrecht

Everyone with a registry set that includes Matte Proof Lincoln Cents should have a copy of this booklet to sit along side their set.

Someone on eBay is selling them weekly, and you can usually get it for about $15 shipped to you. I don't know the seller and can't make a recommendation, but I do know the booklet and can recommend it!

Here is a link to the copy currently offered: LINK

  • Interesting title. Do you believe the 1917 to be fact or fiction?

Doug, Great suggestion, I bought one sometime back as it is a reprint, of the ANA reprint of their Counterfiet Detection pamphlet which includes the article on Matte Proofs. Here are two I found on Ebay.. The booklet covers die markers for the 22 D, 14 D, and 1909 SVDB. and the Matte Proofs so you get a little extra info.

    Jack,

there was another thread about 1917 Matte Proofs on the US Coin Board yesterday that someone resuscitated.

Personally, I think it is a fiction or maybe there were a few specimens struck for "special" collectors. No doubt if one exists it is owned by the man who wears orange undies.

But, I do find the title by Albrecht to be an interesting one, and not one I would have chosen based on solely on rumors of a 1917 MPL. The only thing in the entire article about 1917 is the following statement:

"Though not an official proof issue, the 1917 was probably a special striking for presentation. Should have the basic diagnostics of matte proof cents."

He was definitely a student of the series, and I've wondered why he chose to include it in the title of the article when all he has to say about 1917's is the above quote.

Was he just trying to keep the mystery alive? Coin collectors love intrigue, mystery, and treasure hunting.

WS, that is a great suggestion as well. Thanks for the link!
