That is a good list, but must also include Manley and quite a number of earlier catalogues. There were some serious collections before 1990. Most can be determined easily enough from Breen's book though.

Half cents is a great series to collect. I did them for years. The only ones I still have are the ones in my 1811 die state set. They are still approachable, very undervalued relative to their survival numbers, interesting as heck, and (please excuse me CU) very well collected raw.

It comes out every other month and is part of your membership in the EAC. Dues are dirt cheap, Penny Wise is incredible, and they are even working on a CD of all of the past issues of Penny Wise. You should join the organization.

  • For those who are serious about the Half Cents -

The only auction sale ever conducted that offered only Half Cents (all dates & varieties) was presented by S H Chapman on June 9, 1924. This was the F R Alvord collection.

One variation of the sale catalogue came with 5 b&w plates. Unfortunately for collectors, there's less than 10 copies known with illustrations. However, reprints of this sale were made in the early 1970's and the plates included in the reprint are fairly nice.

For those doing pedigree research, this is a must have sale.

Strangely, for those selling and / or collecting this interesting series, the Alvord pedigree is missing from nearly all accounts.

ditto the two collections RTS notes- both very impressive and I would add them to the list.

As for the list Ray Rouse put together I think I probably have a little over half of them. I have tried like a bugger to track down a copy of Greg Heim's quick attribution guide but have not had any luck.

Norweb had a serious collection of half cents (Norweb I), including most die varieties and also most proofs by variety. Garrett I (1979) and Eliasberg I (1996) should also be considered, though I would say Norweb is the most important of these three WRT half cents.
