WOW---2 1/2 dollar gold quarter eagles......

Wow, prolly for the first time in about six months, I looked for the ultra low mintages on e-bay (around 5,000 minted) and couldn't believe the prices some of those coins are asking. (PCGS or NGC slabbed). I was buying some of those coins earlier in the year anywhere between $300-$600. Now it seems those coins are over asking over $1000 (when you can find them).

There are some tough ones to locate. Maybe the market is finally paying attention to series. I am a new buyer for these little treasures. Competition drives prices up!!

Gotta respectfully disagree with you. Folks are rushing out to collect Prez dollars, and first wives gold coins with mintages in the multi-millions and 40k respectfully. Now why shouldn't a coin that has a mintage of under 4k be a bad investment?

Some of the dates for these coins are:

    1867
    1868
    1869
    1870
    1871
    1872
    1874
    1876
    1876s
    1877
    1880
    1882
    1883
    1884
    1886
    1887
    1890
    1892
    1894
    1895

Give me a choice of a prez dollar, first wives coin or lowly minted gold coin, guess which I choose.

I thought this was a nice one - one of the low mintage dates

    1890 in MS-62
  • The 1840 to 1907 Quarter Eagles are overlooked and underappreciated. Like others have noted they are too small, have too little gold for the price and the set contains stunningly difficult dates and mintmarks.

I doubt if they will ever find much of a following except as coins needed for type sets. Few collect the Liberty $2.50's by date. The populations may be small but the collector base is even smaller. Most collectors prefer sets they have a reasonable chance of completing.

In my opinion these factors should continue to hold down prices - expect perhaps for C and D coins - for the low mintage Philadelphia issues.

I collect them by date because I like them. I don't expect them to appreciate.
