Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

Got the news on my first submission today (crossovers), if anybody's interested...

Oh, well. Not quite what I had hoped. image Still a pretty realistic result, I suppose. We live and learn.

The following four coins were removed from their holders and submitted raw:

1. 1972-S S$1 Silver, ICG PR69 DCAM ---> PCGS PR68DCAM
(Can't really complain on this-I expected a 68, but knew it
would go DCAM- I already have a 69 DCAM, anyway- anybody
interested in this one?)

2. 1976-S S$1 Silver, NGC PR69 UCAM ---> PCGS PR68DCAM
(Small disappointment but I did OK considering what I paid
for the coin. It'll go in my set- I wonder how long until I can
register it? The database does not recognize the cert# yet...)

3. 1901 $10, ANACS MS63---> PCGS MS61
(Ouch- I really didn't expect a 63 but was crossing my fingers.
Hoped I'd at least get a 62 as that is the bottom line I chose
for my set. When you drop from 63 to 62 the coin halves its value,
and I haven't looked up the 61 price.Guess I'll keep this as a
decent "filler" and then trade it; not a bad coin, really.
It had some dirty spots, so when I busted it out I hit some
small areas with a Q-tip and some diluted Jeweluster, then gave it
a good rinse. Glad to know that my careful curation didn't bodybag
it! Anybody have a good swap or want to buy this? PM me to
negotiate)

4. 1827 50C Square 2, first PCI red, VF 35 (cleaned,
scratched-ridiculous!), then SEGS EF45 (cleaned, retoned, rim
bump)---> PCGS bodybag (cleaning)
(I got this coin as a new collector in 1977 and cleaned it more
than 20 years ago-hey, I was twelve years old at the time, OK? I
knew it was 95% likely to bodybag but thought I'd submit it as an
experiment. It is a sentimental piece to me and the bodybag doesn't
hurt my feelings. It is a beautifully retoned piece with some hair-
lining and a moderate rim bump, but tons of eye appeal in my
estimation. The PCI grade was absurd, the SEGS grade pretty
much on the money, and I've seen uglier ones in PCGS slabs, so I
thought maybe, just maybe...

    Why would you take the 1901 $10 out of an MS63 slab if you knew it wasn't going to get that grade again? That sounds insane. Why not just sell the coin and buy a PCGS MS62/61 and have some extra spending money?

    I tried selling it twice and did not get offers in the range I wanted. Still have the ANACS insert and I can always reholder it as an ANACS 63-my local dealer submits a lot to them. The thing I was trying to establish is what a PCGS MS62 would sell for versus an ANACS 63-
    about the same, I'll wager. (If it had gone 62 I would have kept it for my set). Since it went 61, I might send it back to ANACS (at least it looks nicer now that the dirt has been removed). More opinions?

    The dirt might have been hiding a hairline or two.

    Also, why is it ANACS would just automatically reholder it in a MS63 slab? Don't they look at the coin again? I would think ANACS will not give it the MS63 nod- they're not that loose. I could be wrong, but just because you send them the insert doesn't guarantee they'll just place it back in a MS63 holder. No?

    I've had success reholdering that way in the past, and no, the dirt did not conceal any hairlines.
