1964 SMS PCGS graded set on ebay.

I have not seen one of these sets for sale for a while. Do you think it could sell for nearly $150,000? Im guessing that is the highest graded set out there. I sure would like to have that half dollar.

They have had this set for sale for many, many months priced at $125K. If it didn't sell at, $125K, let's raise the price, it will definitely sell for almost $150K. I think they would have better luck selling the coins individually, and having much better pictures.

I know where 2 sets are and have for the last 2 years. You may notice on this particular set it is not all original, in fact this one has been mixed and put together to make it a high end set. To me- this set lost its originality when they did this.

I would rather have one complete set that came in the same packaging and let the grade stand for each coin as it sits.

To me originality is a far better premium than taking one coin from several different sets to make it 'the best' anyone can do that with time and money.

Were these 1964 SMS coins actually packaged as sets like the 1965 sets?

If the owner had the coins reholdered in consecutive numbered slabs, how would you know these were not from a single "set"?

Ya, I saw that the cert numbers are not in order. Hell, the slabs dont all match. Does anyone know what the original packaging looked like? If anyone would have a picture, that would be great.

This could not happen unless you cracked the coins out and resubmitted. That would be a huge mistake. When PCGS reholders coins they retain their original cert number.

You can send them in as regrades in the holder and they will reholderwith a gurantee not to down grade. I think you can also send them in as a $5 reholder but I am not sure if you get the old number or a new one

of the 2 sets that I personally had in hand- they were from an original gov't packaging- as they did for the 65. Long story short- both sets were sequential in numbering- full color photos of the package and coins in a 8X10 and then of course the slabs theselves afterwards. All the coins were obviously not the same grade- and that was the awesome part of it.

The provenance was there with the pics and to me that is what makes a set worty of a huge premium.

Cheap advertisement and never know if you'll caych a fish with the bait too. There are afew high profile sellers who do this and rarely actually sell on eBay. Wouldn't be surprised to see this appear in a future sale like Platinum Night at FUN. It has been making the rounds for some time now. An excellent investment IMHO but not at just any buy-in price today.

If NGC will honor the SMS, just send to NGC (cross at any or cross same grade), then send back to PCGS after they are NGC slabbed. Cross at any, etc. Will get new, consecutive, cert numbers.
Expensive to do on many coins but at this level of play, it is a drop in the bucket.

Where did he get these coins? Who was lucky enough to get a set? Any history behind these sets?

Just search on 1964 SMS as we have gone over this several times. There are a couple dozen sets in existence, maybe 20 but I forget. The number is so low that they indeed represent a true modern rarity. Doubt now that many more people are aware of them that I'll have much luck completing my set.
