box collectors here?
I have quite a few - but it was more by accident than design. I just want to say to start:
that Wheaties started their relationship with sports back in 1933 with some minor league broadcasts - evolved into the "Breakfast of Champions" and the rest is history.
Of the 51 players involved in the 1939 ML All-star game - 46 endorsed Wheaties at some time.
The first althlete to appear on the box was Lou Gehrig in 1934 - on the back.
The first to appear on the front was Bob Richard - olympian - in 1958.
The first female to appear on the front was Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
Of course one of the big chases was the Cal Ripken box after he broke the record - the "local" version vs. the "national" had people paying too much IMO for the local one.
You can find all kinds of stuff from the backs to include premiums like this record - Take out out to the ballgame:
to the ubiquitous 52s:
Of course the Super Bowl editions are highly collected - especially the ones that were regional.
One of my favorite boxes is this 1995 Kelloggs frosted mini-wheats - Reggie:
and this 1993 Kelloggs Frosted Flakes - Griffey Jr. If memory serves he was the first individual to appear on this box with Tony Tiger?
Back around 1993 - Pop Tart did a promotion with Dale Earnhardt - and I saved a bunch of the empty boxes - I thought they were too cool to throw out!
So, does anyone else have any?

My small collection
Want List:
'61 Topps Roy Campanella in PSA 5-7
Cardinal T206 cards
Adam Wainwright GU Jersey
Do you recommend collecting the boxes full or empty ? Is there any premium for full boxes ? Do wheaties stains on the card backs or milk spots on the front diminish value ? Does PSA grade the boxes ? Is trimming a problem with these ?.
I have all the recent Spurs related boxes going back to Roberstson and then Duncan and their 4 championships, and they all still have the cereal. Is it edible ?

Great questions Al.
Don't know all of them but what I do know...
1. There used to a "move" toward full boxes - IMO - that's fallen by the wayside - the value of the box is in the CONDITION - not whether full or empty.
In fact, two reasons why empty is better:
a. you can make them flat and store more - if one is a serious collector.
b. bug infestation.
2. As to PSA grading? I know they grade the 52 portrait and action cards and I'm not sure about staining but my intuitions says that's gonna lower the grade? On boxes? Don't know.
I'm not sure on the border of the 52s - the cards are highlited against a dark background - and I've seen them with and without some of the border:
here's with some of the border showing:
So how you trim them may be interesting - PSA doesn't specify this set with respect to grading standards and unfortunately none of the set registry participants included scans.
Another area of interest is Factory Flats - they were never put together and some people prefer these and will pay a premium - how they get out of the factory? I would guess backdoor or dumpster?
If you remember in the early 90s a hoard of unopened 1951 mini Wheaties boxes popped up and I was affraid they could be reprints - so was affraid to fork out 4 to 600$ for the set - they were cool tho.
And last - there's a thread about Chas Gehringer - here's a cool 1938 Wheaties box:
Thanx for the good questions Al

I am debating which way to trim this card.
My first instinct was to contact someone at PSA - but also consider emailing one of the registry participants to see what they think?
How does the back look? That cards looks really clean.

Sweet Morsels Toffee and Chocolates
ya gotta love the baby face
those were the days........
Looking at the back I see what appears to be a wrinkle. If you look closely
at the scan of the front, on the left side of the card and at the level of
Feller's smile you can just make out some slight discolorization.
I will probably get the card graded to keep it in its current condition, but the
wrinkle on the back and the discolorization will lower the possible grade even
before i try to hand cut the card.
On the bright side, my scanner seems to do a good job of hiding flaws. Now if
I could only find a company that grades cards from the scans you send.
I hate to do this but it is something I have to do. I recently moved into a smaller place and no longer have a room dedicated to my sports memorabilia. I have been collection Wheaties boxes for the last twenty-five years. All the boxes that I own are full and never been opened. They still have the original cereal inside of them. They all are in excellent condition. I take care of them very well and now have them stored in sealed boxes with padding. I have certain boxes that were only released in certain areas of the country and were limited edition. They range from All the Jordan's, The Bulls Championships, Northwestern Big Ten Championships. The Spurs Title, Payton, Gretzky and many many more. I used to keep up on them for years and would spend a lot of time and money on getting certain ones and doing a lot of research on them. I am going to package them up in protective boxes ready for shipping. I can ship them any method you choose. There are 117 boxes total and I know from research a lot of ones that I have are very rare. Not included in the total are the mini ones of the Bulls championships along with Jordan's. I had an offer in 1993 for them but at the time I was still very much into collecting them. I am not going to put a price on the lot but I am willing to accept a reasonable and fair offer. I want you to get a great deal but I do not want to give them away either. I am willing to work with someone though. I also am willing to trade besides cash depending on what you have to offer. I am a fair and honest person. I accept paypal for transactions and to see what kind of business I do you can check out my ebay id = illinipride. If you are in my area you are more than welcome to pick them up in person as well.I am located in Southern California. This will add an instant bonus to anyone that collects sports memorabilia and it looks great in a room dedicated to things like this. I want them to have a nice place and someone to show them off. They will be useless sitting in boxes at my new place so I must get rid of them. I can take more pictures upon serious requests and list them. Like I said I am willing to give a good deal.

This is going to make a hell of an addition to someones sports memorabilia collection. This is perfect for a present to the sports fan in your life!
Most of them are over 15-22 years old! Michael Jordan, San Antonio Spurs, Walter Payton, Larry Bird, Gretzky and many many more. This has to be for the right person. Call me to discuss a trade or cash!!!!

WHEN I FINALLY GOT MEDICATED, I THREW OUT THE CEREAL AND KEPT MAYBE 50% OF THE BOXES. ANYONE WANNA BUY THEM??? LOL!!
<< <i>Mike---there is an thread on the 54 post war board about 52 Wheaties counterfeits >>
Thanx Al.
That's how I felt about the mini's.
I don't collect the individual cards - tho I do have the Berra portrait and action cards. Picked them up almost 20 yrs ago - I think I paid a buck?
It seems, perhaps, that collecting newer cereal boxes has gone the way of the SLU?
mike
You have some really nice stuff there that could be nicely 'cut.'
I also like the idea of framing a panel instead.
On your scans - I recomment you use the "resize" feature before you final save your scan.
mike
I know that the cards would cut up nice, but I dont think i could ever do it.....maybe when I am ready to sell,it might be to my advantage to cut/submit/pray for a high grade/and sell at a big auction house...Just a thought...Scott

<< <i>I do have some cereal boxes. They are empty opened from the lid. The bottom is still sealed with the original glue. I want to flatten the box as to save space and store it better. Is it wise to break the glue seal on the bottom of the box just to be able to flatten it?? I don't know what is proper or improper with this type of collectable. >>
It's too bad that a very respected poster cannot give you the sound advice that you seek.
