Do any of these autograph authenticators offer an extra service where they give their opinion as to WHEN the autograph was signed? In some cases, a signature can change over the years, and usually an extra premium is given to an "early" sig versus a later one (and in some cases, vice-versa).
Just wondering. I'd pay more money for a 1950's era Hank Aaron autograph, for example, versus a 2007 one.
Trev I took the liberty of right-clicking your scan and then sent the pic to Bill Haelig (Ripken's biggest Fan). Back when I collected Ripken regularly, Haelig and I became friends, so I figured he might want to see this. Haelig does signature authentication for IronClad Authentics, and has signatures every year of Cal. He said that this card was signed in 1980 when the set came out and he has a Minor league ball with the exact signature signed in 1980. He also said that Cal did not start adding the big 'J' at the end of his name until 1981. Congrats on a great card!
That is one attractive signature. I appreciate seeing players who take their time on these things and make a legible scrawl. Congrats on a great card. Rich
Cal signed his full name up into the mid 1990's, just before the big signing marathons he did to 'save baseball' in 1995. here is what his signature looks on an 82 (rookie year) team ball I own (edited to add image):
I sent this ball to Bill Haelig (who is about the best person to authenticate a Ripken signature) and he said all sigs on the ball are genuine and vintage to 1982. He was able to narrow it down to a six-week period of time in july-august, 82, due to the player names who signed. The ball has other HOF's too: Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray, and Brooks Robinson. Brooks had retired by then, but was there doing radio broadcasts, and the theory is, he was in the dugout or locker room when it was signed.
Ironfan, thank you for the great information!! The previous owner said the card was autographed back in 1980 when the O’s played Nashville, but you really narrowed it down for me.
<<.I have an Emmitt Smith auto that I believe he signed on the clubhouse toilet due to some trace evidence I found under closer inspection! >>
Matt, you cannot always trace Emmitt signings to the toilet based on "evidence" traces on the card. It's only known by the experts, but is was common for all types of Emmitt cards, memorabilia, and autographs to find their rightful home in the local landfill / garbage dump, and often the "residue" was deposited on the card in this environment.
I've also heard confirmed DNA reports that link the "trace evidence" on some Emmitt autographs to Barry Sanders, as often Emmitt would walk around carrying Barry's jockstraps just to discredit those who claimed that Emmitt COULD NOT carry Barry's jockstrap.

completely until now. Was that done in the early 80s?
