FLINT - Former NFL star receiver Mark Ingram, a key member of the New York Giants team that won the 1991 Super Bowl, must stand trial on accusations that he broke into a garage and stole a woman's purse, a judge ruled today.
Ingram, a 41-year-old Flint native who played at Michigan State University, has been in repeated legal trouble in recent years.
Today, Genesee County Central District Judge Larry Stecco ruled there was enough evidence for Ingram to stand trial on charges of larceny of more than $1,000 and first-degree home invasion.
At an earlier hearing, a woman testified she left her purse in an unlocked car in an unlocked garage in Genesee County's Grand Blanc Township the night of Dec. 10. The purse later was recovered, missing cash and credit cards, authorities say.
Police said they found Ingram's fingerprint on the car.
Ingram was the Giants' first-round draft pick (28th overall) in 1987. He caught a 14-yard pass on third-and-13 to keep a crucial third-quarter scoring drive alive in the Giants' 20-19 Super Bowl win over the Buffalo Bills in 1991.
He later played for the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles.
Ingram served a federal prison sentence in 2001 after being caught with $3,290 in counterfeit cash during a police sting in Miami, and he recently pleaded guilty to federal charges in New York in a money laundering and bank fraud case.
