BIN Re 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9; Seller Wants $800.00 Profit

On September 10, 2007, CardboardClassicsLLC purchases a 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9 from LegacySportsRarities for $1,967.00.

1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9 for $1967.00

On September 17, 2007, CardboardClassicsLLC lists the same 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9 for sale. Here's the link:

Auction for 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9

So I email CardboardClassicsLLC asking him if he would accept $2000.00 for the card. His response:

"It would take $2,750 to end the auction early. Thanks for your interest." Wow! An $800.00 profit in the span of two weeks (Auction ends 9.24.07). Now that would be a nice return on an investment. It's currently up to $1225.00. Do you think his BIN price is reasonable? I wish him all the luck.

  • This is the new business model of the new millenium.
Buy stuff cheap on ebay and have them sit in a store for months gathering dust with price tags that are 5-10 times what you paid for them, or open your own auction page doing the same thing but starting the bids at twice what you paid....

He more than doubled his money on a Cracker Jack last weekend, in less than 2 weeks. It works sometimes I guess.

  • What a model!

I don't get it on individual cards unless you've got some kind of clear edge. With Mastro or Memory Lane, you might have an advantage if you're on the west coast, vs bidders giving up and falling asleep on the east coast.

Its a nice Musial, I do give him that.

I might be wrong but I haven't seen a PSA 9 '52 Musial close anywhere near what he wants for several years.
  • I imagine he said that being a smart-arse to you and probaly added you to his BBL in the process

his asking price is a 40% markup. i dont see anything wrong with that. this is a prime example of how difficult this industry is. most industries have a keystone markup, i.e. double the cost = retail price. certainly not here, 40 % = high???

did you seriously think that he would accept your offer of $26 higher than his cost when he just tied up $1974? jmho
  • it's a beautiful card and if you are a collector it's a good price. if you are buying it hoping to make money soon... forget it.

It is hard to get near top dollar with Ebay auctions on 99.9% of cards issued, graded or not. Sure there is the fraction of a percent that induces a bidding war and that is what makes Ebay sexy. This guy is simply trying to buy low and sell higher. His BIN was meaningless. It's gone now.
  • It'll never cease to amaze me that people list such high dollar cards and don't include a back scan. Don't you think it's worth the extra 15 cents?

With ebay and paypal fees, he would probably lose money if he sold it for $2000.

If you self host your images you can have them as large as you want and don't pay any additional fee. I would never use eBay hosting.

I've been doing what this seller does for years but mainly on modern cheap stuff; buying certain cards (often from relatively new sellers) and listing them later for a profit. A solid reputation, quality images, proper description, and in some instances a fair return policy all serve to help a potential buyer pull the trigger.

Mastro just sold a 1964 Stand Up Box they bought a couple months ago for about a 10K profit, and most collectors thought they left money on the table. As someone said, with paypal and ebay fees, accepting 2K for this card would force the seller to take a loss, so I see now problem with this seller hoping to make a few bucks on the purchase. After all, he's listing it as a regular auction with no reserve, so asking him to end it early at a bargain price is inappropriate anyway, IMO.

Well, it looks like Cardboard ClassicsLLC lost money anyways. The card sold for $1,739.00. He purchased it for $1,967.00.

1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 9

Not including time, effort and fees, he came out $228.00 behind. Oh well, I'm sure another PSA 9 will surface sooner or later.

I thought one was not supposed to ask a seller to end his auction early? I had one last week and ignored it, as I was thought I was supposed to do.
  • the seller of topic posts on this board and probably has read this...not that it matters. he normally posts listings on the buy/sell/trade board.
  • The seller also emailed people off the registry that he had 52 Bowman PSAs on the bay...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
