Total. Red Sox. Implosion.

For Yankee haters everywhere, you'd think we'd learn you can never trust the Red Sox to take care of business. I guess it'll have to be the Angels again (sigh) to dispense with NYY in the postseason.

You know, I'm not a Red Sox fan but I despise the Yankees. And in early June I was in California for my niece's wedding, and we were staying with a friend who's a big Sox fan.

This was a week or two after the Yanks hit rock bottom, and they had recently been hot but still about 11 games out. We were watching the Yankees play Boston, and the Sox bullpen melted down in the 8th to let them tie it and, if I recall correctly, A-Rod homered in the 9th to give the Yankees a one-run win.

It was at that moment I told our host to get ready for 1978 all over again, because the Yankees were the Yankees again at that moment. Dammit.

Wait a minute - let me check the standings...

OK, the Sox are still in first place. Calm down everybody.

And, enough with this 1978 crap. Back then, the Yanks were already in first place by this point, and it took a run by the Sox just to force the playoff game. So, its not the same.

Yep, you got it. It was a Sunday night ESPN Game of the Week. That was the turning point of the season as far as I am concerned....A-Rod hit the Homer off of the great Papelbon. Since then they are 8-2 against the Sox.

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

Yeah, that's the one. Would have been June 3, I think, since my niece was married on the 2nd. Now I remember Morgan and Miller talking about how Okajima and Papelbon had been lights-out for Boston, and Okajima coughs up the tying run in the 8th, and A-Rod punked Papelbon in the top of the 9th.

That game was such a textbook Yankees win (dammit!) that at that point I knew they were back. Some people poo-poohed it at the time, saying I was exaggerating the trends and the importance of the game. Erk.
