Is this 1878 7tf a VAM-110, -145 or -162?

My VAM book indicates I must distinguish VAM-145 and VAM-162 from VAM-110. I have found a 1878 with broken N and M and what looks like a broken G of GOD, but not broken r of trust? Any help on which one of these VAMs it might be would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

VAM 145 has B2b reverse with open o in God and full crossbar on r of Trust. VAM 162 has B2c reverse, closed o in God and partial crossbar on r of Trust. Can you upgrade your reverse image file? The current image is very fuzzy.

Looks like a 110 to me
O is closed R is not Broken B2A rev vam 110
  • Looks like a vam 110 to me also. Another indication is the die crack connecting the "S" and "O" on the reverse.

Thanks BIGDAVE. I was afraid of that, I was hoping for a VAM-145. Here is a link to a Heritage auction of a VAM-145, but the coin shown doesn't appear to have a broken o in God. That is the main reason I thought this coin might be a VAM-145.

Can someone direct me to a link to a better photo of a VAM-145.
  • I found it funny that when I clicked on your link, it said that I won that coin. My recollection is that I sent it to PCGS for grading and vam attribution and it came back an MS63 vam 145. However, when I look at the photo now, it appears to be a vam 110 (I have since traded the coin, so I can't inspect it). It does not surprise me, since I have another coin that PCGS has called a vam 145, and it too is really a vam 110.

Thats very interesting Yale68, so it sounds to me like an open o in God is probably the key to determing if the coin is a VAM-145 vs 110.
  • Yes, but as stated above, you also have to look to see if it has a "broken r", to rule out vam 162
